Any difference?
First post since my intro here guys. I'm in the market for a good trail bike and beleive it or not I just discovered the KDX200's. Haven't had a chance to ride one and probably won't before I buy, so I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible. My first question is, are there any differences between '04 '05 and '06 models? I have all three available to me to purchase and of course the '04 is the least expensive. If they're all the same I'd probably buy that one. Any thoughts?

they're all the same except for graphics. I'd say get the one that has the add-ons that you would be putting on anyway. Most of us add around $1000 + to the bike after we get it. Also, if you are an experienced rider and like to go fast, you might want to look at the MX models. <quiet voice on> A lot of people in here are slowly turning their KDXs into KXs, but they don't want to admit it. <quiet voice off>

DirtDaddy, are the 2004, 2005 and 2006 models that you are looking at, all new? Between the three, the differences are various logo stickers of different designs, different frame color (2004 is gray-silver, whereas 2005 and I think 2006 are silver-ish) and 2004 shock spring is sky blue (holdover from previous years??) instead of dark gray/black (whatever color it is now). I don't know of any significant changes between them.

I was like you Daddy.... I have never heard of the KDX until after my misguided attempt to buy a good trailbike and ended up with a KTM 250EXC. A KTM is a race bike regardless from what you may have heard. After I hurt myself pretty good on the KTM due to lack of throttle control, I was looking again. A friend of a friend had an older model KDX and that thing rode like butter and was what I was looking for but his was an old aircooled model.
I did a little research and found out that they were still being made and I found a 92 model in perfect shape. I rode that for a couple of years and then bought my 95 I ride now. It's a little slimmer than the 92 and has easier carb access. Other than that... I feel they are pretty equal. Just a great bike and all I will ever need. Heck... I even bought a spare!

Thanks!
Thanks for the replies. Yes, all of the bikes I mentioned are new, including the '04. Left over stock I guess. The '04 is $3600 OTD, the '05 $3900, and the '06 about $4200. I couldn't care less what year they are as long as they were the same bike. Do these sound like good prices for this bike? And while I'm asking, there is a 220 available also. Should I consider this one too, or is there a reason they aren't making it anymore?

Current MSRP is $4,199, so the 2006 model sounds like it is in line with that. It sounds like the '04 may be your best bet among those. The last year they made the 220R was 2005. I am not sure why they stopped making it. Since you are in California, you should research "green sticker" and "red sticker" issues. That may affect your decision as well.

The 220 is going to have an O-ring chain, and a smaller carburetor. The chain is supposed to be more durable, but is wider, so the guides are wider too. The smaller carb is supposed to make more low-end torque, but it strangles the bike at higher revs. I had mine bored out and modified. Most guys with 220's do this. It costs around $200. I've never ridden a modern 200, but I hear they are quicker than the 220's. My 220 is moderately modified, I ride with guys on bigger bikes (450Fs, 250 MX, 650R) in a drag race they can all pull away, In the real world trails, I ride better than the guys with the huge motors, so it's not a problem. The guys with the KX and YZ 250's are better than me, and they smoke me everywhere.
