I found an 03 kx 250 for nearly nothing. I've been scouting for a KDX 200, but not having a whole lot of success. Question being, how could I make this into a woods/trail bike which would closely resemble how a KDX acts on the trail. Or is it a waste of time? I searched this forum, and it doesnt appear that the tranny will be trail friendly. Do I just keep searching for a KDX, or is there potential here?
First time poster, but lurking and reading for a while.

A flywheel weight would be a great place to start. If you can get the KX for cheap and it is in good enough shape then buy it. If you put a few bucks into it and still need to have a KDX then clean it, toss on $100 worth of new plastic and sell it to buy a KDX when you find one.

Adding a flywheel weight like already mentioned is a good start. You could also adjust the timing to be better in the low-mid range of power. From there you have to start getting into some more radical things. Porting, RB head and carb mods, and a KDX250 trans swap. Of course, I doubt you would really need to do them but they would make the bike more woods/off road friendly.

I am going to talk to this seller tomorrow, so may e a KDX is in my future after all.
What is a reasonable offer to make without insulting him?

That bike looks to be pretty good. And where I am the price is good, but, start low. The worst he can say is no. If he has the price reduced then he has probably been trying to get rid of it for a little while. Go back through the craigs list adds and see if you can tell how long he has been trying to sell it. He might be to the point that he just wants to get rid of it.
Look it over and see how much you can find wrong with it. Play in any of the bearings, worn brakes, dents, scratches. Not that any of it would be a deal breaker but it might help you talk him down.
I would start at $1100 or so. He may take it or at least you have a good starting point.
You could also say you are looking at http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/3402940925.html and see if that can help get the price down a bit.

Oh, very possible! As in, it has been done! I can't remember what years exactly but I think it could be done for sure up to '05 KX250. Here is the write up on it at TT: http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/902713 ... msearch__1rbates9 wrote:SS109 wrote: a KDX250 trans swap. .
