Best shifting transmission oil?
What are people having good luck with? I have been using golden spectro clutch saver and it seems to be ok but after a few rides it starts to shift funky, like finding neutral just about every time from first to second. The oil will look great and when I drain it there is very little if any flake in it. I don't mind spending money on oil if it will 1. last a few rides (15-20 hours), 2. shift better.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

tried a cheapo oil (valvoline for car, the non energy saving kind) and it cured the problem I had with mine.

This is the stuff. The clutch loves it, the gears and bearings do too.

Been using this since the early nineties.
In ten years of racing MX we never had one DNF due to a lower end problem of any kind running this stuff.
I keeps everything super clean and has amazing shear stability properties.
Both my KDX's luv it!

We don't normally go 15 hours before changing the oil. That said I've run a fair amount of Rotella T and never noticed any shifting problems. The last few years I've been using Klotz Flex Drive 30. Haven't noticed any shifting problems with it either. It is kind of expensive though. http://www.klotzlube.com/proddetail.asp ... uart&cat=4

I just run whatever's the cheapest motor oil I can find.
5-30 or 10-40
I don't like ATF, just a couple rides on it and it goes south

oil is oil I agree, but you gotta admit some will make your bike shift differently. When I got my DRZ 400, I change the oil to valvoline same as the KDX, it did not like it at all. Kept finding neutral between 1 and 2 every shift, I tried some redline for 4 strokes and still had the same issue. I went with sikolene (that **** IS expensive) and the problem was solved. NOT saying more expensive oil is better, just saying some bike for whatever reason prefer one brand vs another.

I used to blame my oil for mis-shifts until I took a good look at my shifter shaft
I was always hitting neutral going for second.
There was enough slop that the shifter was hittng the flywheel cover
Since I replaced the shaft it shifts very crisp

I use Pro-Honda HP Trans Oil SAE 80w/85w, never had a problem shifting on my KDX. I always thought that, since the KDX I own and the XR 200 I used to own have wet clutch systems (as most dirt bikes do), that it is required to run oil that is specified for use in motorcycles? I would've never thought about using car oil in my transmission

I could see that being a problem but I had mine off in the fall and it looked great. Also the problem of finding second happens after a few rides on new oil. After an oil change it will shift good for a while.Mr. Wibbens wrote:I used to blame my oil for mis-shifts until I took a good look at my shifter shaft

I like that honda HP oil. Works good. I also have a sneaking suspicion that it is nothing more than re-branded ATF. Even smells the same.KDXrider1989 wrote:I use Pro-Honda HP Trans Oil SAE 80w/85w, never had a problem shifting on my KDX. hell yeah it does, but the only problem is that I have to travel at least 15 miles to the nearest dealership to pick some of it up. If I could use ATF or regular motor oil in place of this oil and get the same results, I'd be much happier to travel across the street to get some. Also it's a lot cheaper
