My friend has a 2001 kx250 2t and the rear shock rebounds fast and voilent. What could cause this? It just started happening recently. I'm mechanically inclined but have never worked on a shock before only forks...can I fix this myself?

Yep, that is what mine did on the KDX. Time for a full rebuild. You can do it yourself but, considering the tools you need, recharging the shock with oil and nitrogen, and the hassle, I would just have someone reputable do it for you. I had Donny at ZR1 (http://www.zr1suspension.com) do mine for $75 plus parts. Mine needed a seal so it came to about $85 total. you can do it yourself, and have a shop refill the nitrogen. Can't recall the cost of seals and bushings + oil + gas and it might be cheaper to have it done, I just do all I can myself that way I know it's been done right.

I like to tear things down to figure out how they work. Once you know how it operates, get easier to troubleshoot or tweak.

I just changed the shock oil on two of my KDX's. It was suprisingly easy. I've sent them to a shop in the past but I decided to give it a try. Just use the shop manual and it will be just fine. I was able to take mine to my work to re charge the nitrogen.
