The story goes, had to go off the trail to get around a downed tree, while beating thru the brush I had to pop up over a log. The linkage caught and I went over the bars. I picked the bike up and, bam, there was a coiled up rattler. He never struck at me, but it skeerd the beejebus outta me.
So now I tote a pistoli.

I think it'd be faster to get the hell out of dodge than reaching for the gun wearing gloves, or looking in your back pack for the damned gun...
I could see carrying a gun in bear area though...

Too big a chance riding though a pot field or finding yourself upon a meth shack, to not have some kinda weapon
.22 is kinda small
it's about shot placement

Yeah... I talked to Kirsten and she has told me what you have to deal with up in your neck of the woods. I am glad we are not that advanced in Illinois.

Awhile back Brad rode up on a mexican guy in full camo, toting a radio and a rifle
Guess he was a little surprised by Brad and I don't think he spoke english...
Either that or Brad did not stick around long enough to find out

I don't know where you were, but "Mexican Special Forces" if there really is such a thing have been seen over the border in the USA. The have been probing on to our side and some have been hired by Cartels and Coyote's to assure safe passage for ilegals. If I lived on the border, I would carry something more formidable than a 22 caliber.
A 45ACP always worked for me. Or you could be like the French and always carry your Right side arm and your left side arm and raise them whenever you are threatened by an aggressor.
Luckily, here in PA I do not feel the need for a gat when riding.

I always carry when riding. Being here in Southern AZ I have no clue what I will come across. Wildlife (javelina, mountain lion, coyote), drug runners, illegals, etc.
Also, I definately wouldn't carry a .22 pistol. There are a lot of dangerous critters around here that require more stopping power than that! I carry my Para P13 .45 auto. It rides in a military style MOLLE medical pack that I carry on the front of my pressure suit. It has a zippered pouch with pull cord for easy access with my gloves on. Plus, it has several compartments for carrying ID, cell phone, snack, money, etc. You can see it (tan pack) in the pic below sitting in my lap. After this pic was taken I purchased a black one to "blend in" with my gear better.
To answer the question, yes, it is better to twist the throttle and get the hell out of a bad situation if you can. However, if you can't, it is nice to know you do have the means to protect yourself.

You'd better not be within 50ys of me and my Ruger MKII. A .22 is more sufficient than many realize. Concerning firepower I'd be more afraid of animals than men. However, near a meth lab I think I may want an upgrade.

I carry a walther p 22 in a paddle holster. I live on the gulf coast in alabama and have personally ran up on a meth lab in the woods not even 500 yards from a high school and that was enough to convince me to start carrying. Also two guys were riding about a month ago and got jacked for thier bikes at gun point in the woods of all places, The criminals have since been caught but, their bikes are long gone. No one is getting my bike without a hell of a fight.

If I rode on the gulf coast of Alabama,
I think I would tote a shotgun.
Which reminds me, I heard of a guy that did in
fact ride with a shotgun. It was mounted ATV style,
on the side. He took a spill and broke the gun clean in two.
