maier 2 stroke pipe guard--aluminum
anyone got one of these for the fmf gnarly pipe? just wondering how it fits and if it works.I just dropped 300 on a pipe..now im terrified of rocks. jimmy

I have one on mine... a Maier... It works well. Not as thick as a Moose guard but allot cheaper and works fine I think. I rarely go down though. (KNOCK WOOD! )

I got the Moose. It took a few beers, a propane torch, and a rubber dead blow hammer to install. I may have softened the aluminum some by heating it and allowing it to slow quench but hopefully not too bad. I have been down twice since I got it, once at slow speed and once in the top of 3rd, its holding up great. People looked at me all crazy when all I bought at wal-mart that nite was a half case of coors and a propane torch!

I din't say it was a horrible-bad thing to do. I just wondered is all.
When you bend something TO something else, you generally can't get a good fit if there is any 'spring' at all to what you're bending. Did you get it basically formed then take it off the pipe to get enough squeeze to make the fingers tight to the pipe?
I don't know how much Waylon it takes..........

I use a fiberglas guard that's been fixed, repaired and fixed summore. Something a bit more durable would be nice.....

The key for me was to get it hot enough, and then I just formed it around the pipe. Mine has not been off since I installed it. Had me worried canyncarvr!
All those tabs bend easily with good heat applied like Wibbens said. The guard comes from the factory with the tabs in a half cylinder shape but it is straight longways and will not flex at all when trying to bend it by hand.
I put one of the supplied hose clamps on the fat side of the pipe to start and went from there.
The propane torch is a must. I did not try oxy-acetylene, figured it would discolor the aluminum. I don't have my guard mounted as high as Wibbens' on the fat side, that way I get more coverage on the skinny side.
The Moose guard comes with 3 hose clamps, I think 4 would be better. Oh and it did NOT come with a sticker, that was the only thing I was disappointed in.

Got it.
I thought it came FLAT..and that every 'finger' had to be tweaked.
The 1/2 cylinder bent part is most helpful.

If I remember correctly my Maier Pipe Guard came semi shaped. I put it on and used the clamps very lose then started hitting it with a rubber mallet tightening the clamps as I went. Got a very good fit and didn't ding or damage the FMF one bit.Mr. Wibbens wrote:Mine was flat
