New Guy
Hello All,
New to the site and bikes in general. I race my YFZ450 in the GNCC's, D-6, P.A. State Series, AGP, and NECC hairscrambles, but it has gotten to the point now where I am traveling almost 5 hours each way to race.
My son races his 2008 Honda CRF70 in the local series that have popped up lately. He really enjoys riding his bike but has shown interest in riding a quad " cause daddy does" so instead of pulling him away from what he really likes to do cause thats what I like to do, I found a cheap enough bike where I could start to do the local races with him.
I found a 1990 KDX 200 for sale on craigs list and gobbled it up for what I think was a really decent price with the condition of the bike. I will be asking lots of questions that may seem elementary for you, but I have never owned a two stroke before and am pretty much clueless with this bike.
I haven't ridden a dirtbike for over 12 years, got this today and am racing it on sunday. Maybe not the brightest thing ever but I have to show my son that you dent have to win to have a good time.
Thanks in advance,
Drew

Welcome, have a good race! Suspension is going to be your biggest gripe about your new bike since it sounds like you are a faster rider(at least on a quad), but the motor is going to suprise you. Stock susp is setup for slower pace. TONS of info on here for fixing that.

Welcome to the site! Fuzzy's nailed it on the head. A stock KDX has a fair amount of grunt once you get the jeting squared away (its usually pig rich in stock form). Take care of that and get a set of KX forks and you'll be good to go.

Last night I was reading about he KX hybrids you guys are doing, is it really worth the time and money? I bought this bike for a 1000 bucks and cant really see spending more then half of that on a front suspension? I guess i will rip it around this weekend and see how bad it is.m0rie wrote:Welcome to the site! Fuzzy's nailed it on the head. For anything other than slow speed trail work the stock forks are a liability. You don't have to spend a lot on a kx conversion. I think i spent under $100 total swapping the front end on my 89. Well worth the $$$.

Well, I have a pretty nice set up on my quad. I do agree stock VS stock the KDX will out perfrom the quads set up but aftermarket quad VS stock KDX, not even close

Well, I pussed out! I woke up and was packing up the truck and trailor and we got hit with a thunder storm. I havent ridden a bike in forever and didnt want my first ride to be a race in the rain.
I was so mad at myself afterwords but in the end I think it was the right decision. I have a problem just haveing fun at races and always try come in first. Never happens but I always try!lol
I know if I went, I would have probaly gotten hurt or something so I didnt think it was worth the chance. Hopefully I can get a good amount of seat time in before the next one and be a little more prepared.

yeah, the bike tires me out much faster then the quad. Both are tough to ride for extended periods of time if your pushing yourself.
Soon enough ill be racing this beast though
