Plastic Repair

Post by paceyman »

I busted up my front headlight shroud. Both upper supports are off and it ripped up the middle. It's $83 from the dealer and did not find an a/m replacement.

What would you suggest I use to get this back together for a few more rides before I caugh up the dough?

Thanks.

The most attractive "tough guy" repair uses small zip ties. I'd take a nail, hold it with vice grips, heat the nail with a propane torch and make holes either side of the split. Stitch it together with zip ties.

I think UFO makes an aftermarket replacement that is held on with rubber straps. The rubber straps do let the shroud move on impact rather than shatter.

There is a plastic Welder on the market and Rocky Mountain carries it. It works pretty good but you will still see the crack. $42 plus S &H but it will pay for itself if you use it a few times.

I like bailing wire and a dremel myself

I can see where wire or zip ties would work on the split, but not work on the mounts. Time was short since I have a race tomorrow and opted to try Plastic Epoxy. I'll snap some shots and post them after the race and report back.

Thanks for the ideas!!!! :supz:

Try a piece of aluminum and pop rivet it to each half. Or, replace the broken off tab with a piece of metal you've shaped for yourself that includes a long enough overlap to pop rivet or bolt on to the main housing.

Look for "Permanent Patch"made by "The Original Super Glue"
http://superglue.supergluecorp.com/15298.html
It's a Soft Fiberglass Patch Kit, that you cut, shape & Stick in place. It then hardens. Check Home Depot, Lowes or your Hardware Strore..
