IMS Gas Tank?

Post by SteveWR450f »

Thinking about getting an IMS gas tank. I have seen a few Clarke tanks and usually a big fan of their stuff but it seems that the quality of the kdx tank is not great. I have seen 3 different Clarke tanks and all of them had 2 dents on the top left of the tank. Something to do with their mold I guess.

Anyway, leaning towards trying a IMS tank. I think that requires using their special shrouds. Any comments about the tank? Good fit? Quality?

Does anyone know where you can get different decals for their shrouds? Not really sure I want to ride around and advertise for IMS. Not really into the "product endorsement" thing. Thanks.

I'm an IMS desert green gas tank owner:

IMS strenght:
1- Same size as the stock (not wider) when you ride
2- The MSR rad guard and Works Connection brace fits on it
3- No clearance problem with the seat
4- They said the capacity is 13 liters, but it's like 15 liters (stock = 11,5).

IMS weakness:
1- Well, some people dislike the look.
2- You must use the IMS shrouds (stock doesn't fit)
3- The bolts for the shrouds take a litte more time to bolt thant the stock.
4- Not exactly the same green as the KDX green

If you want picture, check my bike;)

Hey Steve. I have the Clarke on my KDX and am very impressed with fit and finish. It fits in their just like the stocker and you can use you stock shrouds too. No problems with girth either.

I just ran the Desert 100 using it and after my first 55 mile lap, I still had over a gallon left.

I had not heard of any problems with Clarke.

got the same one and same comment.
If I could afford it I'd get the clarke, cuz the IMS is VERY BUTT UGLY, it looks sooo 70ies. My bike is an 05 but you can't tell cuz of these horrible shrouds, they're not even symetrical when you look from the front of the bike, 1 points down more than the other
But heck I don't care too much, it does the job, my bike ain't pretty but she sure makes me happy!
Otherwise no complain.

Thanks for the comments guys. Looks like I will give the Clarke another chance. I like being able to use the stock shrouds.

Check on Ebay... the IMS selling price is around 100$ for a used tank...

At this price, if you dislike the thank, you can sell it after at the same price... and if you like, it's a cheap upgrade.

My Clarke tank has the "dent" in the left side. I figured I got a factory second but looks like I'm not the only one. Truth is, I don't care about the dent, it fits great and works great -

I have now seen 4 Clarke tanks in person and each one had a dent on left side by radiator shroud and second dent by gas cap. Must be something with the mold.

Hey Firffighter - does yours have the same dent?

I guess I should care less about this stuff - its just a dirt bike but all of us have put a lot of time into these bikes and I like when they work great and look good too.

No dents in mine. I got my from Krazyinski when he parted out his 220. He mentioned something about Clarke making a newer one for the KDX. Maybe they have noticed the problem and are making a new one?

Message from Clarke:

Any new KDX tank we send will have the same two spots on them..
They are just tooling/mold flaws and we cannot do much about them

Thanks

Looks like fireffighter got the rare no dent version. Lucky bastard :supz:

Check with FRP, he likes to horse trade. I sent my stock front end to him and he sent me the clear IMS, check my gallery for a look. The clear tank is not as fugly as the green one.

Tooling mold flaws? What kind of crap is that? I would expect that from harbor freight knock-off, but not something made to be a premium product. "cannot do much about them".... uh, how about fixing the mold or making a new one?

I used to work in a small aircraft factory - we made molds for fiberglass parts - and fabricated virtually the whole airplane from our facility. If a part came out bogus, it was not used.

I remember when even Al Bundy respected craftsmanship. The mighty "Ferguson" toilet he installed in his private bathroom tells all that even a low-paid shoe-salesmen will spend the necessary bucks to get a quality product. Shame on Clarke.

Frankly, I was kinda suprised by Clarke's answer. What it told me is that despite our love for these bikes the KDX line is not a big money maker for gas tank makers. I am sure they would redo the mold if it was for a new 4 stroker. Oh well . . . fortunately the dents are not a big deal.

Well I'll be darned, I do have dents. In my tank that is.

I did not even really notice, but I also dont get too caught up in the "looks" of my bike.

I dont feel they are very significant, but if you are paying for a new one, you would expect it to have no imperfections.
