new clutch
Heylo,
I am guessing that my 05' 220 is already in need of some clutch work.
The harder I run it the worse it seems to feel and sometimes really protrests shifting. I know the rumor's of the stock piston being a grenade (I replaced it the day I got it with a Wiseco) and I think I remember reading that the stock clutch is cheesy as well.
What is the ultimate replacement recommendation?
Hinson basket? What else?
Thanks
Also wondering about relacing the wheels up with black Exel rims. What do I need for this operation? Spoke part#'s? Compatability?
Final thing. What do you first look for when the bike seems to run hot?
Thanks again.

How often do you change the oil?

I recently purchased a used 05 engine. filled the oil and ran it. clutch kinda sucked. Changed the oil and rode again....clutch worked a bit betta....changed the oil and rode again....clutch worked even betta yet....after 3 oil changes.. very big improvement.
IMO,
Previous owner did not change the oil frequently enough and the clutch plates were contaminated and clogged up with the very material that wears off the them from use. Not having any type of oil filtration system in out KDX's means that the oil can quickly become contaminated which compromises the surface of the clutch plates and causes poor performance. 2 to 3 frequent oil changes will clean the clutch plates out and you will get some of it back. Stock clutches are not the best but they do work for a good long time so long as you perform frequent oil chages and are not over abusing her by grabbin a hand full all the time. Im no master cluch monkey so I could be wrong. This is just what I have concluded through my own personal experiences.
when the bike runs hot you may want to check the finns on the radiators. not being carefull with a powerwasher can bend the fins over and block air flow. overheating can be caused by a lean condition. decide how you were running when it overheats. If at slow speeds/ pilot circuit, you may be able to tweak your air screw in and correct the problem. Or go up on you pilot one size. same idea on the top side of the throttle position.

Thanks on the clutch end of things.
I am just wondering about these things and if I should get into the upgrading or sell the bike, because I do have an interested party.
I bought a new Husky TE 450 this summer and love it but I still prefer the KDX in the tight stuff.
I jumped a 2' diameter log this summer and put a noticeable flat spot in the rear wheel. I was considering replacing with an exel rim and a black one so I thought it would be cool to do both.
With regards to running hot. I have the Devol guards on but was considering taking them off and putting the stock fins back on. I am running engine ice and a 45 pilot
I am getting the nudge from my wife to keep the bike becuase the resale is so low on these bikes and I really do love it.

Keep it... you won't regret it.
Are you losing coolant or just running hot?

Jeff is out of town for a while
he is only showing the front in black available. I have been trying to get a hold of a good set in black for a while. Every time a set comes up on ebay, the price goes way over my head. I looked at Excel and didn't see the rear in black for the KDX 2.15x18 36spoke count i think?? cant think of the part number. I'm sure there are some out there somewhere. perhaps another manufacturer.
I just checked at Talon...no wheels available for KDX.

For overheating be sure your radiator cap is good and in working condition. Also, you may consider changing the cap to the high pressure one that is available. A weak cap will vent too early and seem like your bike is over heating when it really isn't.
