We have a winner!Indawoods wrote:The KTM????
You know, I really liked the KTM and I got along pretty well with it. At the same time, it had enough little quirks (the "superior build" thing is WAY over-rated, IMHO) and I'm not totally sorry to see it go. My initial plan was to sell both KX and KDX and focus on the KTM, but neither Kawi sold. It got to the point where I had 3 dirt bikes, the KTM needed some work (chain/sprocket, fix leaky countershaft, piston/rings coming up, etc) and I just didn't want to dump more money into bikes w/out first generating some $$$ back. So, I decided to put everything up for sale and regroup, depending on what sold.
I thought the KTM would sell best and it did, but the amazing thing is that, after months of trying, I'm probably going to sell either the KX or KDX this weekend. One of the Kawi's is going to a local boy who's going to try them both. I'd like to sell the KX to him because 125's are incredibly hard to sell right now and the bike would fit him very well, but the KDX might be the better bike for him since it'll be his first dirt bike (after several street bikes) and he'll be riding with a mutual friend who also has a KDX. Whichever sells and whichever I'm left with, I'll be happy. I really need a track bike more than I need a woods bike, so I almost hope the KDX goes and I'm left with the KX, but we'll see what happens.

Uh-oh. Check out my modified signature...
Got $1300 for the old gal. Not bad for a '96 KDX200, if you ask me. I'm afraid to tell you what's sitting in the garage right now. mOrie knows, but he's sworn to secrecy. One thing I'll say is that it's brand-new and- now that the KDX sold- totally 100% paid for. And that ain't a bad combination no matter how many valves it has.

It might just be a phase, like the KTM was. We'll see.Colorado Mike wrote: you got something with valves???!!!

ok, what is it?
YZ450F. I'd post a picture, but that might be going a little too far.
Everything I read on DRN and ThumperTalk gave the YZ thumbs up on reliability. I agonized over it or the YZ250 for a week, but rode 8-9 laps on the shop owner's personal bike and decided to give the 450F a try. I got the YZ for below dealer cost (it's a leftover '04), along with free track membership for a year. The '06 250 2S sitting next to it would've cost almost $1000 more and I figured I could use that for my first head job.
The kind of funny thing was that a friend called me on Thurs and wanted to go trail riding, and I _almost_ pulled the KDX off the shop floor. But I decided to give it a week and voila....it's gone. Oh well, there's lots of bikes out there if I ever decide to go back to a KDX or whatever.
I just can't believe I sold all 3 bikes in less than 2 weeks, esp. after having the KDX and KX up for sale for months.

Well congrats. Yamaha makes nice bikes. My kid has one and the quality is very high. I've ridden a buddy's YZ450F, and it's a powerhouse for sure. If I had a bigger garage there would be an '06 YZ250 (2 stroke) sitting in there for sure.

I still have the big blue pig....er...YZ, but I just bought a sweet '05 KX125. The 450F is fast and all that, but it doesn't turn and I really miss the sound of "wwwwwhhhhhhhhheeeee.....ring ding ding....whhhhhheeeeeee...", if you know what I mean. Riding a KX again is like riding a motorized mountain bike.
Say, anyone know of a good '04 or better KDX for sale?

Yeah, I went there right after I posted that! You guys were right- the KX and KDX combo was the best. When I had that, I could ride the 125 on the MX track and have fun and when I wanted to go trail-riding or exploring, the KDX was KING. Even though I didn't trail ride much, it was worth keeping the KDX around for that. But, on the upside, after I get done selling the YZ and can afford another KDX, then I will have moved from a '96 KDX and '01 KX to an '04 or better KDX and '05 KX, and that ain't a bad move. Anyway, I'll be putting the YZ up for sale soon and then I'll be on the hunt for a KDX again, I'm sure.
I've learned a lot by riding the 450F, too. It made me work much harder at good body position 'cause you're not going to hang on that beast with your arms and you can't force it into position like you can a 125. But, dudes, I haven't cut an inside line since I got the thing!

Welcome back!! I know what you mean about a light 2-stroke. I love riding my kid's if the trail is the least bit open. I keep thinking about a KDX (or even a KTM 300) motor in a 05 or 06 YZ125 frame. Don't know if that would work, but it sure would be a blast to ride. That YZ just makes you look good.
