Greasing the KIPS

Post by k.d.x. »

I tore apart the top end on my 91 and saw that I needed to replace the valves. So I ordered both of them and replaced them. As I took everything apart I cleaned each piece painstakingly well and dry fit it all back together before I did it for real. When I dry fit it, I could move the entire system by using the main rod, the main valve and it was easy to move. So now I put the grease like is instructs me to to do but when I put it all back together there is obvious resistance. Not metal to metal but just from the grease.. Is that right?

What valves are you talking about? Do you have a part number?

The sub port valves I imagine... buykawasaki.com is down right now.

What was wrong with them? Gears fried or burn up?

Don't use grease unless specifically instructed to do so in the manual. As stated, I recall the manual calling for oil more often than grease.

That said, grease certainly increases resistance. Take a wheel bearing as an example. MUCH easier to move one with no grease. That sure doesn't make it better.

re: Did I miss something?

Just a bit of a gibe is all.

If there's a 'both' of 'em...it's the subport drums he's referring to.

...you knew that....

My goodness.... so much hoopla over using the term "valves"!!!
Below is an exerpt from the service manual. This is why I used the word valve, and this is why I questioned about the grease. If so many people are just using 2-stroke oil to lube the kips, can this be why there are so many issues with the KIPS valves needing to be replaced so often? Just a thought.... but WTF do I know?

Oh.... yes, the teeth were grinded down on the gears on one side but I figured what the hell, I might as well replace both since I'm in there.

“-Apply a Molybdenum disulfide grease to the following:
Exhaust valve upper and lower journals
Exhaust valve pinions
Valve guides(inside)
Valve operating journals
Valve operating valve jack
-Adjust the exhause valve position in accordance with the following procedure:
After installing the rod retaining screw in the cylinder with the valve operating rod, pull the rod to the right side as far as it will go.......”
