I just dont want to do anything stupid. is it ok to manually turn the shaft to turn the valves on and off. it is supposed to be the first tooth on the shaft to turn the rod right. thanks.

it's ok to turn it. The better way is to open the screw-sloted round cover on the left side. That way you don't screw up a gasket.
