how to warm up your KDX200

Post by bws2 »

I have an '01 KDX200, with about 10 hours on a Wiseco piston.

I've read some different approaches to warming up your bike.

One idea is to start it, then ride easy for a few minutes.

The other is to let it idle for a few minutes to warm up, then ride normally.

How do you guys warm up your bikes?

I let it idle with a few throttle blips until the top of the radiator is warm to a bare hand touch, then roll off at an easy speed for a minute.

I start my bike up and then gear up. By the time I am ready, so is the bike. I am forced to ride off easy out of the parking lot. But I think that would be good practice anyway.

I like both of these methods and do the same basically. I think the main thing is that you don't start it up cold and then rev it like crazy to clear it out.

For those who are foolish enough to do it that way, look up "cold seizure" and "four corner seizure". Save your dirt bike from your dumb ways.

I gear up also while the KDX is warming. Once the idle drops, it's time to ride. Though I must do a cleanout (a few seconds at wide open) as the trails are right out of the garage and need her at full strength.

I too start it up and let it idle while I'm gearing up. It usually runs for about 10 mins before I ride off. I absolutely refuse to ride on or rev a cold engine (and that goes for everything I own). Its usually nice and warm by the time I'm ready...... Coolant temp is usually at least 130° even if it's cold out

I absolutely cringe every time I see somebody that starts it up stone cold and immediately sits and revs the crap out of it then takes off. Or like I saw one guy do with a YZ..... Start it up and literally just held it wide open for several minutes straight. It was like 30 degrees that morning too. Freaking idiots. Every single time I ride I see this too..... Uugghhhh

Idle while gearing up. Make sure radiator is warm. Then ride it like I stole it!

I try to follow Jeff Slavens/Dirtbike channels advice for 2 stroke warm up. Start it up and just ride it. Don't floor it obviously.

Like everyone else said, I pull it off the trailer fire it up and gear up its typically warm enough at that point to take off.

Same here, gear up while it is at idle. I like to ride it easy for the first bit until everything is really up to temp. It absolutely kills me to see people rev them up while they are cold. That ought to be a felony!

Only if you have a cast piston. But even then that wouldnt be enough warm up for my comfort level.

I will gladly spend a few cents in gas to prevent problems.

Waiting a few minutes to warm up, not chancing a cold seizure vs. working for X hours to earn money to pay for a replate, piston kit, etc. is worth it to me.
