Basket case KDX on Christmas Island

Post by darkfibre »

Hi again,

4 years ago I had an 89 KDX200 and because it did not have compliance or a VIN it couldn't be read licensed without a LOT of effort, I moved it along.
It was however a great fun bike.

Moving to now - i'm on Christmas Island and found a 2000 model that the young local Malay mechanic had owned, and had given up on it (Ignition problems).
It had been sitting out in the tropical weather, and the jungle had actually grown around it.
I have since done a bit of work on it, and hope to have it ready for road licensing in the next few weeks.

WOW. That is not an easy starting point. I know you had to put a good bit of work into rebuilding it.

You certainly have your work cut out there !

How easy will it be to have parts shipped in ?

Bike looks like a SR model ?

How can I tell if its an SR model, and what are the differences?

the plate says DX200J-A303 11/00 JKADXNJC41A013052

Seems to be an Aussie version of a H that can be road licensed.

I first noticed the pillion pegs ( SR ) & larger flywheel ( again SR version to power more electrical stuff bigger stator plate ) the carb on the SR is smaller too as is the intake boot etc...fuel tank is metal with a locking cap , & it has oil injection, oil tank is under the LH side panel.

The SR is a street version & comes with indicators & extra wiring etc ...

It's difficult to see from your pics if your bike is a 100% SR kdx.

That is a "J" model. Are you sure the Ricky Stator part fits that?

It is a 2001 model, not 2000.

Everyone look at the kickstand location and lack of mounts on the side of the swingarm.

Yours is a "J" also"?

Is that a steering lock on the left of the head tube?

Is you CDI a single box with a plug? Most KDXs have a box with wires coming out... Took me ages to find the CDI unit that matched the missing unit.

Carb is 35mm, plastic tank no oil injection.
Does have a rectifier.

I hadnt noticed the kickstand mount until Jason pointed it out...

I never knew the H series kdx made them this way ....especially with rear pegs too .

If your bike has the plastic tank , no oil injection & 35mm Keihin carb then perhaps Kawasaki actually made This model for specific countries..... However the motor does have a different flywheel & possible stator plate too ?

I will do pics of the stator plate when I remove the rusty flywheel this week. I'm hoping the ignition stator will be the same, as the bigger windings are on the charging side... will soon know.

Someone correct me if I am wrong or this can be improved.

OK, I had to break out the Model ID Recognition manual.

KDX200-H is 1995 - 2006
KDX200-J is 1997 - ??

Both are off-road only, but for different markets.

KDX220-A is 1994 - 2005
KDX220-B is the "SR" or dual sport type, 1994 - 1999

I think there is no "SR" 200 model past the 1994 model in the style that is similar to the "E" models.

This would not relate to the KDX250 / SR 250.

Anyone want to see the Australia parts diagrams, there they are. Click around to look at various ones. That one is for the "SURE AS HECK not an H" stator plate.

It does look like the same spec as Mavericks kdx ...
Lots point to it being the SR version but with the addition to the usual top end that we all know ...it's just the stator being different ...

What is stamped on the frame & engine numbers?

Perhaps it is a limited run that only made it as far as Australia?

11005-1742 is what the (1742) means on the casting on the cyliner. That is 198 cc for 1995 - 2006 KDX200 as well as the J models apparently.

A "J" is not an SR.
