Crank oil seal
Hello folks. I'm suspecting my right side crank oil seal (sitting on the bike) is starting to fail. My question is do you have to remove the crank and and install it via crank cavity side or on the other side of the case?

Re: Crank oil seal
You have to split the cases to replace the seals.

Unless you are a little nuts like me. I ground the lip off. I can now replace them from the out side.

Roy, did you torch the cases before prying it out? if not, then what trick did you use?

I allways grind the lip off any engine I rebuild. Also means you can install the crank correctly.

Re: Crank oil seal
Roy, where did you get it?
that would certainly save a lot of work (pulling the cases apart)

Re: Crank oil seal
It's made by lisle I got it off a tool truck, but they are easily found online. It's a simple job to change them now but it was a pain to grind the lips off the case with the crank in. For some reason my bike seems to love to eat seals. I just pulled the cases apart had the crank checked and put new crank bearings in. We will see if that helps any.

If that makes a person nuts, then I must be certifiable. Here are the retainers I made:crank seal retainersroyadams wrote:Unless you are a little nuts like me. I ground the lip off.

If you have to replace the seals, the bearings should be replaced as well. Just split it.

Re: Crank oil seal
Totally agree if your bottom end has a couple hundred hours on it. About two years ago I rebuilt an engine and had a crank seal start leaking after 3 hours. Not sure if I got a defective seal or if I damaged it during the installation, but it definitley sucked having to split them again just to fix that one seal.Julien D wrote:If you have to replace the seals, the bearings should be replaced as well. That situation was my main reason for removing the retaining lips. Making the retainers was total overkill. But I had the time and aluminum and wanted to see if I could pull it off.

Re: Crank oil seal
That makes perfect sense. Must have been a defective seal. I have decided next time I do a bottom end refresh to grind those lips off myself. I would feel better with those retainers like you made. Nice work!

Those retainers look nice. I just put a little three bond on min . It's been three years and I have not lost one yet.
