GAS TANK LEAKING AROUND PETCOCK.
Leaking where exactly? From the hose barb, the lever, or from where it actually mates to the tank? Foe the barb you just press it in tighter. Channel locks with a rag on the jaws works well for this. For the lever and where it mates to the tank buy a petcock rebuild kit.

Re: GAS TANK LEAKING AROUND PETCOCK.
The last owner jb welded a crack right where the pet cock meets the tank. I have rebuilt the petcock already. What should I use instead of jb weld. My plan was was to buy some apoxy and spread it over top of the jb weld that's currently on there. What would you do

Can you clarify what is cracked - the petcock or tank? I would assume it is the petcock since jb weld was used. But if it is the tank then that would explain why the jb weld is leaking.Chilly wrote:The last owner jb welded a crack right where the pet cock meets the tank. I have rebuilt the petcock already. The correct fix is to buy a new petcock. The last thing I would do is smear epoxy over a failed JB Weld application.
If you are set on trying to repair your existing petcock then I would chip or grind off all of the old JB Weld first. Then prep the surface properly and apply the JB Weld again.

There was a crack in the tank itself and Its right beside the petcock. I have already rebuild the petcock. I was thinking of smearing apoxy on it but wasn't sure if it would hold or not. I will try it and find out I guess. What brand apoxy is best for this being it's going to have GAS on it at some point.

Ok thanks. I know this whole rebuild project has been a nightmare. Always something.

My tank has the exact same issue. '93 kdx. No one has tried repairing it yet, thankfully. Hopefully I can do it right.

Plastic welding best route (don't use epoxy, it will fail).

Even the JB weld plastic "bonder" recommended in another thread?

Re: GAS TANK LEAKING AROUND PETCOCK.
I am not familiar with the JB weld Plastic Bonder, but a quick look at their site indicates it's not epoxy, but an urethane adhesive. They do specifically list polyethylene as a target material so it might work really well. May have to get some to have on hand.

Re: GAS TANK LEAKING AROUND PETCOCK.
Another poster mentioned it in a thread talking about the same stress crack and that they used the bonder. Last night I drilled out the hairline crack to clean in up and make it big enough to squeeze material into it. Used the bonder, let it cure for a couple hours then threw the petcock back on and put some gas in to see if it would hold and no leaks overnight. We will see how it does after vibration and riding.

After taking it out for a hard ride, it still isn't leaking, so it seems to be holding!
