Another kdx newbie hello from Connecticut
Picking up my first KDX. Have always wanted one now I have stumbled on two nice bikes. One that I have already purchased 99 kdx 220 and one that I just found today 2005 kdx 220. Both I think where amazing deals. The 99 was $800 and the guy with the 05 wants $900. Pretty sure I'm going to get the second one to. Anything I should look for as far as known problems ? I'm a mechanic so I know the basics but is there any specific kdx issues with these two models. Thanks

Bad OEM piston, soft fork springs.

I would by whichever is cleanest. Even if it's the 99.
Though I'm partial to the 05..
Oh. And welcome to the site.

Both will get new topends. Go with new oem or aftermarket. Weisco? Already found 2006 kx250 front end looking for another. Is this conversion worth it?

The conversion is totally worth it. Do not use OEM pistons on a 220, they have a bad casting. Use a Weisco or Wossner.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy both. The 2005 may get made into a street bike

Good to know about the Pistons. Haven't looked but do these jugs have the piston letter stamped on them? Thanks for answering my questions!

Piston letter will be on the piston. When I did my son's I took the jug up to the shop I bought the piston from. Just made it easy.

Re: Another kdx newbie hello from Connecticut
Took awhile to get one of the bikes due to the massive amount of snow we have but I finally got her. Second bike was a too good to be true deal. And the seller was extremely shady so I past. But one is better the none and this bike is super nice.

Nice bike. Looks essentially stock and I see you have the much coveted kickstand so there's a plus! What are your plans for the bike?

Re: Another kdx newbie hello from Connecticut
I'm just doing basic maintenance for this season. Next winter will be a full rebuild. My sons and I are already in the middle of a completely hand built 140cc pitbike. For next project I found a kx front end for it. New pipe and silencer.new Plastic frame getting powder coated. Factory connection will do may suspension and a bottom and top end. But one bike at a time. Also need to get the lights squared away. Haven't messed with them yet but hope I can get them working.
