New to forum (UK)
Hi All
Really good forum, lots of information.
I've just picked up an '89 for a bit of green laning fun - don't know much about anything really but will learn pretty quick.
Other than being under-powered (all standard bits), having a warped front disk, bent bars and a leaky tap, all is looking good - new bars, disc and pads ready to be stuck on this weekend.
I found a free to download service manual for '89-'94 - davesbikes.weebly.com/manuals.html and hope to increase power a little by tinkering before committing to changing exhaust, jets and reeds.
I'm sure I'll ask some pretty green questions but please bear with me.
Cheers
Rick

'89-'94 will be the correct manual for your bike, tho it is normally frowned upon to link to a free manual download. Not really a problem, but you may just want to edit your post or a mod will probably take care of it for you
If your kdx is under powered it's likely due to a KIPS malfunction or worn piston/rings/plating or all of the above. E series (89-94) models are kind of notorious for cannibalizing their powervalves resulting in them either sticking open(low bottom end power) or stuck closed(low top end). Only way to find out with be to open it up and have a look!
Good luck and keep us informed on the build

Re: New to forum (UK)
Thanks for reply - I'll take a look at the powervalve operation tomorrow, as can do this without opening her up, low end power is what's missing.
If it is stuck open is there potential to damage the thing by riding it a little before stripping down and putting right or is it just performance that suffers?

Cheers

You won't harm the engine with bad powervalves....what you will want to look for is gear teeth of the left and right side + idle gear. They are made of a soft alloy that have a tendency to wear down over time. The rod that controls these, as well as the center valve are made of steel.

Re: New to forum (UK)
Thanks gotanubike that's really helpful - I expect there will be a fair amount of wear and I'll have to replace quite a few bits but at least I can have a play on the tracks before dismantling.
Yes, it was on Ebay around October time, road registered with V5. It passed an MOT just needed a sticker over the 'Not' bit of 'Not for road use' on the silencer, a speedo that connected to nothing, a horn only of use when the engine is not running and a number plate - all sorted in Cornwall : )
Cheers

Some mechanical parts are a little difficult to get over here in the UK, but most are available if you search hard enough....MD racing in YEOVIL stock UFO plastics for the kdx & also levers etc .
