How much did your USD fork conversion cost?

Post by Colorado Mike »

I'm pretty much resigned to spending even more money on my bike. This seems like the next illogical step. I have started trying to locate the parts. Any comments on problems to avoid are welcome, along with input on how ride height was affected and other impressions.

Thanks,
Mike

Stupid money for me. The Forks I bought for $125 needed the clamps and rebuilt, that put me over the $700 mark when you throw in the front wheel, axle and new bearings with spacers. This all not to mention the @sshole that stuck me for $300 for set of phantom forks that never showed up. Oh no, I have'nt forgoten this dip$hit! I can't wait to take a vacation to Portland OR. Wha?! Oh, I'm sorry, it pisses me off everytime I remember it. Little off the subject sorry.

It's still worth the dough in my opinion though. I'd do it over again but would be more careful next time around with parts prices. At the time I was doing mine there was'nt much to choose from anywhere. Now it seems like theres a new set on E-bay every week.

Considering that the price to convert your suspension to one that just works 1000 times better is that of a topend, I think it is well worth the price. A Scotts stabilizer costs more and works much much better on the KX frontend than the KDX frontend. Stability, control and safety is the goal.

$450 for everything. $200 parting out my KDX stuff on eBay and to Jeff Fredette. Final cost: $150. Then some machine work and misc. hardware for maybe another $25.

Thanks, Green Hornet!

Sorry to get off topic there Colorado Mike. Just to add a general comment, from having worked on all the different kinds of KDX forks in the last 20 years, plus a few different years of KX forks, the KX forks look impressive internally. It is one of the factors that got me off my can to finally start getting a KX front end pieced together.

Also, how many posts have you seen from people completely regretting and hating changing to KX forks?

I'm at $450, but my parts are truley almost new, with only a few hours on them. Tree, wheel with new tire on it, spacers, axel all with 1 hour on them. Forks with a few hours, but in near perfect condition, no leaky seals. Complete 03 package. Very tight IMHO.

This package is for sale, at the moment.

T-Roy, are you selling that "very tight" package, or buying?

My price included shipping. I found the forks on eBay, contacted the seller and negotiated a complete, shipped package for $450.

So THERE!!! :snooty:

OK, paw paw. In one earlier post, you said it was $25 for the machine shop work, so where do we get the free misc. hardware and gas money to drive to the machine shop? OK, forgive me, it is late Saturday night.

Off topic slightly but it's just to put something into perspective.

I payed $202.50US for the forks and $50US for the wheel....

Now I contacted a few wreckers / breakers / salvage yards over here to get prices on KX forks.

The BEST price I could get was for a set of 96KX125 fork legs only in need of rebuild for a grand total of $900US

It's all good though. Because the tightass wouldn't budge on the price I decided to ring him back once I got my forks from Ski. "Hi Sir I was wondering if you would be interested in buying a front end off an 03 KX250 (rattled off the forks goodies) for $1200AU ??" There was a slight pause and he said "Nah thats a bit too pricey, sorry". I laughed and said but you expected me to pay the same price for a crap set of 96 fork legs off you last month, he goes "Oh nah you can have them (96 forks) for $700AU". I hung up at that point histerically laughing.
