220R vs 4 stroke power.

I have not owned a big bore 4 stroke what is the power of my 220R like vs say a 400 or 650 4 stroke?

I'd say similar to a stock XR400. Mellow, smooth, torquey, but runs out of steam before making any real power.

Not on the same planet as an uncorked or HRC tweaked 650. They can be unbelievable monsters that can show a modern 450 mx bike its tail light in a drag.

My 220 had Fredette Racing porting, cut head, bored carb, rev pipe, etc etc. Still electric smooth, but with a ton more top end. Bike reved nearly 2000 rpm higher (gained 12 mph top speed, even though I added 2 teethe to the rear sprocket).

A nicely setup kdx with a good rider should walk an xr400 easily. The power is indeed mellow, but that's when compared to an MX tuned 2 stroke. They are still way snappier than most 4 stroke trail bikes. A 450 mx bike is a different story, they do have gobs of usable power, but the weight distribution and suspension make it difficult to keep up with a proper 2 stroke trail bike when the trails are tight. Keep in mind also the difference between the 220r and the 200. The 220 makes more torque down low and less power up top. It would compare to the 400 4t trail motor more closely than the 200, although peak power between the 220/200 is pretty close on paper.

That's the way my 220 is set up (except for porting) and it screams. I'd say it has about the same overall power as my Husqvarna TE310 thumper (upper 30's), but the 220 hits a little harder (and quicker) at low rpms. The thumpers I've owned don't have the instant "hit" the smokers do - even when jetting (or injection) is right on as they're set up for midrange and upper mostly. The TE is about 25-30 lbs heavier than a KDX, and the XR400 is even more so... so that's part of the equation too. Remember tho', a thumper hits every other revolution vs a smoker every cycle...so the thumper tends to hook up better in the slick.

You're not going to get the kind of HP a WR400, 426, or KTM big bore puts out, but so what? They're a different much heavier animal anyway.

I guess I was thinking if my 220 can keep up with the 4 strokes on our club rides.

Absolutely, provided you can ride it well. The big bore 4t's will have an advantage when the trails are wide open. When its tight, your kdx will shine.

It really comes down to the rider.

I ride with a lot of big bore 4t's. 9 times out of 10 my old Skool e series 200 shows them up in the woods. Now of course, get to an open field, they can pull away from me. I don't even follow them onto a mx track.

Unless your trail rides are drag races it is all down to the rider. My kdx went to hoonfest (big cr500 event). The AA rider on a sherco was the only guy leaving me in the dust. Of course, this was a trail ride, not a race.

Drag raced a stock yfz450 and Trx450 today. To my surprise I absolutely smoked em! Even put a couple bike lengths between them and me at the end! Not to mention we were in sand and all had paddles!

I recently came back from a 3 day group guided ride which included fast fire track gravel roads to technical woods riding to tight single track narrow up & down goat trails....there were around 14 riders inc our guide & myself in total, the bikes included 11 4 strokes from the usual suspects..ktm, yzf, crf..sizes were 250cc ,450cc & a 400...the 3, 2 strokes were modern ktm 250 exc & me on my kdx 220. The riding was fast on the fire tracks & quick on the technical stuff....the 4 strokers would pull away from me on the straights but in the woods etc I was keeping up with some of them & even passing others when the riding was getting technical on the hills..i was getting traction where some struggled...the guys on the ktm 2 strokes just flew past everyone everywhere!. when I did get stuck I was glad I had a light 2 stroke to pull around..you should have seen the 4 stroke guys sweating pulling there lumps around, the only time I really found it hard going was going fast on the rough stuff, the weight of the 4 strokes would absorb all the bumps where the lightness of my kdx just seemed to bounce off the top..holding on tight for that length of time took its toll on my body, especially my hands!! was a good 3 days though :grin:....forgot to mention but our guide was a chap in his 60`s who rode a rather beat up xr400 that smoked like a train....he rode the wheels of that thing & not once did I see him break a sweat..he was virtually uncatchable on all the trails & rode like a man possessed putting guys half his age to shame..we later found out he has been riding trials & enduros for many many years.

So much of speed and control is just knowing how to set up the bike, and that comes with experience. I bet that older rider knew his bike and it's suspension well - and it showed.
XR400's have a pretty good reputation as a great trail bike too...

I owned a 97xr400 and now have a kdx220 with a pro circut pipe. The xr 400 had much more low end and the kdx has more on top amd probably has more peak hp. Their both great bikes.

The old XRs are still a very good trail bike..its just a shame Honda never decided to fit them with an electric starter :sad:
