What are you planning on doing with it? It's a pretty good looking machine, and I'm sure I could find something to do with it. But a busted up $700 thumper could end up being an expensive toy. And really, next to a 200+ smoker.... Kinda boring. So you'd have to do something stupid with it!

Re: opinions please (in other words, talk me out if this)
it just looks so cool
i would love to have second plated kawasaki to keep the KDX company
i just cant help but wonder how the wifey would look on it ?
ive never given the KLX 250 any thought as a beginners bike but you make a persuasive argument
the seat height is a few inches higher then i hoped for her bike but still a few inches lower than the KDX

Am I being sent to the correct link??
The bike I see has this below it: "Bike is not running and the engine is currently out of the chassis."
At least price an older KLX300 that is running.

I wouldn't touch it. You have no clue what really needs to be done to it. The only way I would feel safe is to split the cases and go from there. Eh, not worth it.

$675 for a non-running 17 year old four stroke.
What does a non-running 1996 KX250 go for in the same condition, $300??
I seriously doubt you could part it out for what it costs.

Why bother??? your KDX is a year newer, and the KLX has basically the same frame with the USD forks. If it's to lower the seat height, look at a Kouba link and/or shock mod to reduce the altitude.mhhh...i wonder how that puppy would do with a KDX 200 engine in it ?

Yeah, the older KLX chassis really has nothing on the KDX, by design. For a wife/buddy/kid bike it'd be fun. I would only fool with it if I had the money to spare.

I can sell you a completely assembled 91 KX 250 front end. Wheel, complete brakes, triple clamps, disc guard, fork protectors. It just needs a fender (I'm keeping the fatty that's on it) and bar mounts. I can send you a picture tomorrow. It does need seals or the old ones cleaned out. You come get it you can have it for $100.00. Then you'll have $575.00 to get a title and a lowering link. pic...

my view on "project" if the sum of all part exceed what I'm about to pay for it then it's a potentially good project.
That way if it cost more than expected to rebuild, you can part it out and recoup your money.
If i can't do that then i walk away or talk the seller down.

Re: opinions please (in other words, talk me out if this)
yeah, i guess it might be a tad more trouble then its worth
still seemed like a nice project though
scheckeat, i agree that it might not be the best bang for the buck but once you add in the funfactor who knows...it may be worth it
Corona, that does sound like a good deal but im not really looking for a set of USD forks, just thinking out loud, comparing the two bikes
(i have a 99 KX front end on my DD but not looking to spend the money on USDs for the project bike)

Re: opinions please (in other words, talk me out if this)
No sweat, I really only need the front rim for a spare but I feel guilty about tearing up a perfectly good wheel. I'll probably just clean them up and sell them on fleabay and gut the wheel.

Re: opinions please (in other words, talk me out if this)
send the guy an email just to see what is up
he says he bought the bike with the top end removed so he "guesses" it needs a top end
who knows, the guy who owned it before him may have pulled the jug to find the crank is snapped in half and shelved it
not a whole lot to go on

I think its too much. I just bought a running bike for $650, so at least for around here that's too high.

I like KLXs but would avoid it, too much of a basket case. As mentioned, KLXs are good wife/gf and loaner bikes. My Pop bought a 300 new in '97, and it was pretty good for any of my friends who were visiting without a bike, but the old man hated it because it was hard to start. They changed the auto comperssion release in 200ish which helps but the CV carb is a turd. My gf loves her '05 KLX300 after I spent hours dialing in the carb to make it an easy starter. I agree with Jason, if you're interested in a KLX, you could find a later model 300 for less than you'd likely end up putting into that 250.
