I just scored a deal on a 96 kdx 200. first smoker ive had in years or worked on. Have done plenty of work on streetbikes tho. It seems to be missing on the top end was wandering if anyone had any idea what to check.

Welcome!
I would start by doing a compression check (with a gauge not your foot) to start with and then go to the jetting guide. That should get you going in the right direction.

Do a leakdown if you can. If 'missing' is acutally detonation your motor will be scrap soon. Detonation sounds a little different on a 2-cycle...esp if it's light. A leakdown will find a leaky crank seal.
