89 kdx200 seat cover replacement

Post by chadr »

I've been needing to replace the seat cover on my kdx due to a tear that just keeps growing. I ordered up a seat cover from userid grnsales on ebay. He didn't have a cover listed to fit the e series, but suggested a kx500 would fit fine. Given that it was only 32 shipped compared to much more expensive e series covers I decided to give it a try. Any suggestions or tips to share before I get started on this job?

It'll fit, may take a few tries though

I've ordered many covers from this seller (ceet), for my 90 kdx200, my kdx220, my klx300, and my hybrid. They fit perfect (not one size fits all)and last about 3 years with my cti braces which are pretty hard on seat covers. It's not hard at all to install new covers. Just follow the instructions and tack it in place with all the wrinkles pulled out, then staple it down. The cover is non slip with a good amount of stretch to it. If you have trouble with it most car upholstery places can do it for you in about 10 minutes.

I tried two manual staple guns (one claimed to be heavy duty) and neither was a match for the plastic. I was only using 1/4" depth staples and they would barely set into the plastic. I may pick up a harbor freight air powered stapler to try next. Im not expecting much from a $20 air stapler. Is the 20+ year old plastic more difficult to work with?

Everything I've read about redoing seat covers has mentioned that manual staple guns are borderline at best for penetrating the plastic seat base. Try the $20 air stapler. For $20, even if it only lasts long enough to do three or four seat covers, that's like a lifetime in terms of needing new seat covers.

An air or electric staple gun should more than do the job. I used a manual stapler and it sucked big time! I will never use another manual version for doing a seat cover.

I used an Arrow as well. I was not pleased with how much re-stapling I had to do.

the arrow Mr W pictured is the exact one I tried. It even has the same heavy duty sticker to prove it is heavy duty. It does staple insulation onto wood siding with no trouble since that is all I've ever needed it for.

I don't think there is any way the 89 - 94 kx500 seat cover is going to fit my kdx. I spent about an hour working with it and all I have to show for it is wasted time :) Looks like I'm off to order the right one from ceet.

Guess I'll try to resell this the kx 500 cover.

It took me 5 or 6 tries to get mine stretched all the way, but I did mine in the winter

I'd get it stapled on as far as I could get it and leave it by the furnace while I was at work

Then start over when I got off work

it was a kx500 ceet gripper
