chat room option ?

Post by diymirage »

hey guys

I was wondering how we would feel about a chat room function on our humble little site?

the main reason I was wondering is because ive found myself in conversations in post where each person posts one or two lines at a time and it seems like something that would fit better in a chat room, a somewhat informal exchange of information which (in my opinion) does not need to remain on the forum, sucking up bandwidth

would it be conceivable or just more hassle then its worth ?

Definitely something that I have been looking into. The issue with it right now is that we don't have server resources to handle a live chat function. We're still rolling on shared hosting, and we are only allotted a small amount of CPU time on the shared server. I will probably be moving us to a dedicated host solution within the next 12 months, after that we would be able to provide some sort of chat service. Right now I'm spending most of my time trying to optimize the mess that is PHPBB to operate within the confines of our shared hosting service. Took me days to optimize search functions enough to keep searching from causing the site to be throttled by the host. Ugh.

What are you noobs talking about??

We already had that just 8 years ago. Of course, there were less than 50 members, probably.

What was it, Wednesday nights at 7? Monday?? I think I remember complaining about it interrupting football.

OK, so it was 8.5 years and maybe not EVEN 50 members. I did get Wednesday night right.

Check the top of this page... i.e... "Link to Wednesday Evening Chat Session" Join when you can... we live in different time zones, so it will start when two people are in there and end whenever. I hope this is OK.

Yeah. With a large forum the chat function uses a lot of CPU time. I don't think it would fly today. I know sites like TT have chat, but I never used it.
