I'm running amuck........

Post by canyncarvr »

Mr. J:

Rather than my usual windbag, whiner, surfeit of useless drivel, I'll hope that keeping this simple will suffice. Of course, there ARE particulars...but....

Why are messages (PMs) in my 'outbox' folder? I sent them (submitted), but they didn't send.

Thanks summore.

my best guess is you tried to send a PM to a non-contributing member who does not have PM priveledges

Good guess.

Except, I don't think it works that way. You are told (if there is a problem) WHY there is a problem..like the intended recipient disallowing PMs, or the user name not valid.

In this case (oh man! Here come some particulars!!! ), the 'submit' button is there and everything SEEMS to go OK, 'cept the message isn't, then, in the 'sent' folder, but the 'outbox' folder.

Besides, the member(s) do have PM privileges according to the site.

I imagine it's simplicity itself. The answer I mean. I'm mighty simply..just not quite simple ENOUGH figger it out, or spend enough time trying.

OK. More particulars. YiPpEe!!

Time. That's part of it.

I have a message in my outbox that has been there for months. I figgered there may well be a lag between submitted and sent..but the PM sitting for months made me wonder.

I tried three more PMs to someone else. They went to the outbox folder. I waited some. I completely exited IE (what I use) thus clearing cookies (IE style), then logged back in: Same thing. Still messages in the outbox..the old one, and the new ones.

Looking NOW? The outbox is empty 'cept for the old one that was there to start with.

Hhhmmm....a little bell is ringing....

Something tells me the messages sit there 'til the intended recipient logs into the forum. THEN they're sent.

How 'bout that?

That would mean the old message in my outbox is there 'cuz the user hasn't been 'on' in awhile.

**edit** Nope. The user I sent the PM to has been on since I sent..today, even.

IF that is true, I could say I'm amazed that I actually reconnoiterd the matter to a successful conclusion!!!

'Cept...it's more likely I asked the question some time ago and just mis-remembered the answer 'til now.

Maybe the recipient just hit the "Return to sender" button?

Outbox is like a holding area. Your sent message will sit there until the recipient has actually opened it in their inbox. Before they open it, you can go to it in your outbox and edit or delete it. Once it has been read, and moved from your outbox to your sent, you can no longer edit it or delete it. No idea why the PHPbb developers did it this way, but being able to edit the message before it's read can come in handy. As for having a message that is there for months, either the recipient never read it, or they do not have the ability to read it (no PM rights). You're right, of course, you SHOULD get notified if this is the case, and in most cases you would, however there are a handful of users who's permissions are a bit jacked up, and might be able to receive a PM, but not read it.

That would require an assumption that I sent it to YOU.

I din't.

BUT...from what Juliend says, it's obvious that what I sent was simply IGNORED.

Now THAT I can understand!!

And, of course, '..a bit jacked up...' is also something I unnerstan just fine.

Thanks Mr. J!

I've been PMing canyncarvr for a couple of days and all of a sudden I'm no longer authorized to view or send PMs. Additionally, I have no privileges to contact Admin. to find what gives. Clarification?

Your not a suporting member. PM privileges are reserved for suporting members. You must have just been lucky before.

Rbates is correct. Trying to repair all those permissions that are "a little jacked up". Sorry about that, candisammie. Unfortunately not having PM privileges does not remove the PM button, so Carvr is also correct.

Seriously thinking about dropping the cash for something a little nicer and more polished than PHPBB. vbulletin, maybe?

Thanks for the reply, Julien.

I did take note of the PM part..and the 'non-supporting member' part. Wasn't sure how that came to pass. It did work...sort'a kind'a.

PHPBBRRXWKRQ. Wow. Sounds all polished and stuff...'nicer' even.
