Rebuild, NEED Help

So I have an '02 KDX220R, and I working on a rebuild.

I would like to powder coat my rims black, but I have a question first.

How hard is it to take out my spokes for powder coating, and put the same ones back in properly?

Also, how hard is it to reinstall a new ALL BALLS bearings kit into the rim?

Thanks!

PS. For all of you who have done so, how hard is it to completely strip my frame, engine and all, to have it powder coated, and then properly reinstall? Thanks again!

I did it. Took a couple days to disassemble and sort/label all the parts, nuts and bolts. If labeled properly, it goes back together fast enough.
As far as the rims go; cut the spokes and replace them with new ones, it will save some serious aggrivation..
While you have the frame at the PC shop, replace every bearing on the bike.

+1 on what 6Riders said. Tearing the bike down to the frame is very easy and a great time to replace all the bearings/bushings. Wheel bearings are among the easiest to do on a bike. New spokes is the right way to go, lacing a wheel isn't difficult but takes time and patience.

Tape the spoke crosses together and remove all the nipples. If they will all come off, then just pull the rim off and powder coat it and reinstall. It is going to get scratched up in no time, word of warning.

Would you recommend black rim tape rather than powder coating and having to mess with spokes?

Rim tape??

What's wrong with the way they look now? Sorry, but I am not one much for powder coating rims or painting them, etc. I never have enough time and money to do all the maintenance I want, so I never got around to prettying up stuff much.

I just really like the way black rims look, and am trying to replicate a rebuild much like “ced64” did recently.

I had my rims powder coated. As long as you don't use steel tire irons, it holds up fine. I ended up getting one size up spokes as well, looks really good. Image

Those look awesome! Got any pics of them mounted up to your KDX?

No, unfortunately I don't.
The build on those is as follows;
Custom cut spokes, wrapped in shrink tubing with bronze powder coating on the hub and rim.
If I was to do it again, I'd do the rims black.
