Moose Skid Plate Install

Kind of sad, but having difficulties installing the Moose aluminum skid plate on my 97 KDX. It is only 3 bolt/latches and seems to be a typical case that nothing fits as directed. I feel like the bolts that were supplied are not long enough, so the plan is to go to the hardware store and just make it happen from there. Anybody have pictures or advice on this topic? Should be simple, but I guess not. Thank you.
