1998 KDX200 Weak spark problems

Post by jack_ellis »

Hiya guys,
not having a great deal of luck with my bike.

I seem to be getting a weak spark, i have checked the obvious: new spark plug, gap set, new HT lead and plug cap.

The symptoms I'm getting are:
a bugger to start up
spooge
terrible unrideable performance - open up the throttle and it's spluttering and misfiring/hesitating but seems to idle better

Carb fully checks out with the factory jetting
I'm thinking it's the weak spark

I have done some readings on the coil and I have 1.4 ohms on the primary and 5.9Kohms on the secondary.

Someones fitted a street legal kit with indicators etc but half of it is damaged, bodged or not there! Just a side thought but could the small coil on the magneto have been changed?

I will order a new coil for it but i'm wondering if you can thing of anything else to try?
many thanks
jack

Coil and voltage regulator? I've heard a lot of people say to replace both at the same time.

May want to see if they floated the ground on the lighting coil and then buggered up something on the wiring by grounding it to the frame since you said they botched the wiring bit.
