Was putting my KIPS together and came across a stripped out tapped hole in the cylinder. It's bolt that hold that slide from coming out, the far one in the photo:

I don't recall any issues with it when I took it apart, nor do I recall the threads missing.... but it is what it is now. What would you do? Drill and tap for a 6mmx1.0? It's a 5mmx.8 right now I think (or it was). I'm just afraid of drilling it with a hand drill...worried I won't go in straight enough. Then again, I'm not removing much material... the bit should follow pretty good.

Do it myself? Or take it to machine shop?

It just holds the slide from coming out so you can probably just tap it or use a heli coil the heli coil kit should come with the appropriate sized tap.

I would tap it myself. I think you are correct that the drill bit will follow the existing hole.

I would try to just drill and tap it. Maybe make a jig if you don't have a drill press and drill press vice.

When I retrieved my cylinder back from plating, both of mine were stripped out (I think I should have ran a tap to clean the threads before I ran the bolts in). But I drilled, tapped, to the next size bigger 6mm. It worked fine.

That must be a weak design spot, or just a 'Burgh Thing!
One of mine stripped recently too.


the right side had enough bite that I just left the bolt in place, degreased it well and used JB Weld putty (the stuff that you knead together, not the epoxy toothpaste tubes) and filled in around the bolt head. Left side was OK.
No problem so far after a few rides.
Sounds like a hokey solution, but after the profanity tirade that I let loose with, it was the best fix at the time...

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I don't know what they do to clean the cylinders at the plater, but I'm guessing whatever abrasive they use, may be damaging the threads. I know that this area of my cylinder was particularly caked up with gunk, they probably just held the blaster there for a while to clean it all out, causing damage to those threads. Just my guess, not trying to go back to them or anything.

I ended up drilling and tapping it to the next larger size, 6x1.0mm. Trimmed an allen head bolt to the correct length, and opened up the I.D. in the original washer (didn't have any 6mm washers with the correct O.D.)

I'm too late to the party to make a difference in this case. I had the exact same problem on my bike. I eventually installed a helicoil to do the repair. Never done a helicoil before, but I took my time and it all went pretty smoothly.

Years later but appreciate this post! Just took my kips off to find the right side was stripped & couldn't tighten it back up. Gonna drill/retap. This info helps me from trying to figure out bolt sizes.
