Another 220 jetting post.

Post by shoe757 »

Hi everyone, my first time posting here. I have an 01 kdx220 I'm having trouble getting spot on. 140/35 stock needle clip in top slot #1 and stock slide. I picked it up Saturday for $900. He had to choke it to get it to start, no idle, got warm fast. I brought it home and unfortunately I work 7 days a week 330am to 730pm so I've been on limited time. The bike had a serious lean bog from idle(BOOOoooo *dies*). I ran the screw all the way in with little to no results. Took the carb off, checked float height, disassembled, cleaned thoroughly, moved the needle clip to dead center. Much better response off bottom but now I get the rich bog (boooWAHHHH). Also, very hard to get it to idle. I know needle is more 1/4 to 3/4 but I figure it would help me with figuring for my PJ. I'm having a hard time believing I need a leaner pilot but I can run the air screw out 3+ turns and idle continues to raise. I would normally mess around and take my time with it, but my normal race bike (kx500pf) needs a pipe made and first race is this Sunday so I need to get this one going. I have a top end and 607 reeds coming today. Bike still has good compression though. Gas is new, Lucas synthetic 40:1 93 octane. Plug also new. If I forgot anything that will help you help me, just ask!

thanks,
Will

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like you may have a leaky jet block gasket. There is a rubber gasket between the carb body and jet block, and if any PO dipped the carb, that o-ring gasket gets damaged. After that, idle is difficult, and it is impossible to get the jetting dialed in.

I've torn a couple apart before, are the keihin ones like an o-ring style gasket also? Or should I contact jetsrus and overnight it? I have access to about every ID/OD oring they make through work. But I do recall tearing one apart that was more of a crush gasket than an o-ring. Thanks for the reply man!

EDIT: I remember now, it has the goofy half moon jet block o-ring. Anybody know who does overnight shipping?

Yea they said it would be nearly $40 for the overnight and that hurt a little too much for me. I did order it and a few more jets though. I guess while I'm waiting on parts I can get her kdx ready to race. I may throw her carb on my bike to see if I can get SSS with it. But then she may yell at me for tearing hers apart  Either way I will update tonight. Thanks again man!

Well I had to sit out the race today. I was running on 3 hours of sleep for the last 3 nights trying to get both bikes ready. At 230 this morning I had to call it quits on mine. I changed the jet block seal and managed to strip out one of the torq screws. Used a Phillips head of same length to replace it. I put in a 40 PJ and left the 140 main. Moved the the needle clip to the #2 position from the top and set the air screw to 1.5 turns out. 3Rd kick with no choke and it fired and idled. Warmed it ask the way up and then let it completely cool two times. Smells and sounds slightly rich but we will see. On the bright side, her 220 with 200 carb, ran perfect! Soon as the flag dropped she kicked once and was gone! I got 19 more days until the next race, hopefully in can get mine squared away. Otherwise I'm going to have to duct tape myself back to the kx500

Well I finally got my bike broken in and took it for a ride. Still bogs almost to death from a creeping speed in second. Even my 125 pulls harder off bottom. I can't imagine I need to go leaner than a 35 on the pj, I don't even know if they make a smaller jet. Maybe to clarify it better, I am lugging the bike in 2nd or 3rd gear and then ripping it wide open. At which point it falls on its face until I back off the throttle some. I had this problem on my kx500 and all I did there was raise the needle one click. I'm kind of at a lost now. Any input would be awesome

Did you say you had a different carb to try ??

That would be my suggestion ,, a good used 200 carb

use the jetting guide on this forum. one step at a time.

start with freshly cleaned and oiled air filter, fresh packing, fresh mix, and a warmed up bike. it will show you where the problems are, very quickly.

Yea I might have to swap her carbs. Just not sure how to do a plug chop for that specific problem. I guess I could have her follow me and see if it's smoking like a train or no smoke at all. Thank you guys.

i read your post again. if you're running a 35 idler and still too rich to get a smooth idle, something is up. like hte needle seat is worn out, the air screw seat is worn out, the jet block gasket (jetsrus has them for $10) or the pilot just fell out (stuff happens!) in the bowl. you should be lean with a 35 pilot jet.

I went to a 45 pilot, 142 main and checked the floats again. Definitely running better, still just a hesitation off idle to wot but I'm feeling way better. Now all I have to do is throw the fat bars, asv levers, and random stuff on and she will be ready to race next weekend!
