INSTALLED CRF 150 VALVES ON A 2002 KDX 220

Post by GREEN MANTIS »

HI EVERYBODY,

GLAD TO JOIN THIS COMMUNITY FOR GREAT INFO ON MY KDX 220 !!

WANTED TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU ALL ..

THE BIKE ( 2002 KDX 220 ) WITH OEM SUSPENSION WAS DIVING TOO MUCH AND FELT REALLY NERVOUS WITH TOO MUCH REBOUND (TOO FAST) ON THE FRONT . AND REALLY BOUNCY OVER CHOPPY TERRAIN...

WENT TO MY LOCAL SUSPENSION TUNER AND WE TOOK APART THE FORKS ..TO FIND A OLD DESIGN EMULATORS IN THEM.

WE REMOVED THEM, AND INSTALLED A CRF 150R VALVES SET UP INSTEAD...

YESTERDAY WENT RIDING INTO OUR TYPICAL ROCKY TRAIL SECTIONS AND WAS AMAZED ON THE IMPROVEMENT OVER THE OLDER SET UP. NO MORE DEFLECTION... THE BIKE FELT WAY BETTER , MORE BALANCED , AND ABSORBED EVERYTHING WITH EASE ....AND WHEN PUSH HARDER ON THE STROKE IT BECAME STIFFER AS THEY SHOULD NORMALLY DO !!

YOU ALL MAY KNOW THAT OUR KDX REAR SUSPENSION IS GREAT BUT THE FORKS ARE NOT BALANCED TO WORK WITH THE REAR WHEN YOU BEGIN TO GO FAST ... SO BALANCE BETWEEN THEM IS A MUST !!

SO, VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS !!

ILL LOVE TO POST THE PICS FROM THE VALVE SET UP... BUT IM NEW HERE AND DONT KNOW HOW TO INCLUDE IMAGES .

INSTALLED CRF 150 VALVES ON A 2002 KDX 220

I'm really interested in which model valve you used. I looked up the crf 150 on an oem parts finder and there were 3 variations. I guess your talking about the base valve that screws into the bottom of the fork leg if so I guess the thread size and pitch were the same as the kdx fork. I believe you need to put your photos on a photo site like photobucket and post a link to them, I'm not very good with the photos maybe someone else will chime in, sounds like you may have found something really usefull for our kdx's.

Hi canamfan,

Yep its from crf 150r... Ill have to call my susp tuner and ask him from what year bike he took those valves from..

And yes, its the valve set up that goes on the bottom of the kdx forks legs. In place of the Old OEM Emulator system was there .
Ill post pics soon,
Im traveling right now.. give me 2 days and ill have them here..
Thnaks for your reply :supz:

It looks like they have two different part #s before 2009 and after 2009 were different. I'm relly curious about this. If your over 150#s you might want to look into different fork springs.

Yep my friend...used to race in USA and here at home.. but Im relaxed now taking care of the Family and working to survive here...

will ask what year the valves came from also,
You are 1000% right for the springs to my weight... Ive never had or raced a bike with my proper spring weights front and rear... ( Louie at @racetechsuspension always sent me all the goodies ).. but again this KDX is a trail bike just for fun... not racing or going crazy... so , for now saving those $$$ for a upcoming family trip..
Thanks for your advice, will keep you posted on specs for this valves and hopefully youll feel how nice the bike feels compared to the OEM Emulators...
Today Ill go riding again... on a special test and the endurocross track will post pics..
Happy green riding weekend to you all :supz:

Specs as Promised on the Valves Upgrade, which came from a 2012 crf 150 .

FORKS

2012 crf 150 Valves ( custom shims for my weight and terrain )
510cc of 5W Fork oil on each leg
10 clicks out from full hard
Standard Spring and Standard Preload
5mm Fork Top cap on Top triple Clamp

SHOCK

2.5w Shock Oil
175 PSI Nitrogen
OEM Clickers Setting ( sorry but im away from the bike and dont remember what clicks were set at )
OEM Valves Shim Settings
NOTE: Where the Bladder sits on top there is a casing groove which looks like a line ...that we sanded down with the dremel ... this casing line will mark your Bladder so we went ahead and cleaned it.. in order to preserve the delicate bladder to extend its usable life span.
OEM Spring with the necessary preload to give me a Race Sag of 110mm

Hope this is usefull for all of us here,

Cheers
