this might be a stupid question but whats the best way other than only using the adjusters, which to me are not exactly perfect,to make sure the back wheel is correctly aligned ??
also is it necessary to have to loosen rear axle to change front sprocket ???

those snail adjusters are very good, very fast, and very simple to use. yes, they're fine.


loosen the rear axle nut, move the axle forward, drop the chain off the rear, then expose the front sprocket, and it's much easier.

There is a tool available with a straight rod on it to help align the rear wheel. However, it doesn't serve much of a purpose on bikes like ours with the snail adjusters as we have to use the stock adjusters no matter what.

the only conceivable reason I can see to swap JUST the front sprocket is because you are changing tooth count
which means that you will most likely need to adjust your chain anyway...loosen the rear axle and back the snails off

(and in the off chance you are planning on replacing just a worn out front sprocket and leaving a worn out rear sprocket and chain on there, your chain will most likely be tight, so you STILL want to adjust it)

I have string lined a few road race bikes where you run a string around the front tyre high as you can. Then down the bike and around the rear wheel. It will tell you how accurate your adjusters are but with the snail type as said your screwed.

you mean the one that holds the front sprocket on?
if so, that shouldn't be a nut, but a circlip (or retaining ring, or lock ring or snap ring, they go by a few different names)

the proper way to do it is by using a pair of circlip pliers
if you plan to buy a set, get the ones that you can flip around so you can go internal or external with them

if you are like me (cheap) you can pop them off with a screwdriver...but that does increase the chance of warping them

absolutely, yes, it's easier than taking the chain apart.

I swap 13/14/15 frequently, dropping the chain of the rear is the easiest/fastest unless you are replacing the chain.
