Flat rear

Post by JFortner5 »

Hey guys this is a dumb question, but I be never had to deal with it. I have a flat rear tire from riding yesterday. By the time I finished washing bikes I didn't feel like messing with it.

I know how to remove the wheel and tire from the bike, but I've never removed the tire from wheel.

Do I need any special tools or anything? Any pointers?

Thanks,
Joey

Look at this: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50717

And go spend some time on youtube. There's a wealth of pointers out there.

The Zip-ty tire mounts are awesome! Look into those.

Thanks guys, that link was great.

After a couple bleeding knuckles, a few choice words, and one ruined new tube, I got it done.

It's actually easier than I thought once I figured out a few little tricks.

Well I went the put the wheel back on the bike and noticed a small pebble between the bead of the tire and wheel. I deflated the tube and tried to get it out but it fell into the tire.

I'm guessing that's not good. Should I take it back off before I ride?

you tell me ;)

I like what you did there. It's a good point, and it will give me some more tire spoon practice.

:)

nothing wrong with practicing on the spoons
be sure to keep the bead of the tire in the smallest part of the hub, never pull the spoon passed a 90 (or you risk pinching the tube) and use plenty of windex

Some "tricks" to tire mounting;
Use baby powder on the tube, helps prevent pinches and the tube will move freer inside the tire.
When dismounting both sides of the bead, take the beads off of the side that they bead onto. This leaves the rim in the middle of the tire, then remove the tube, push wheel into the tire, turn wheel sideways and pull it out.

I got home from work, took the wheel back off the bike, got the tire off and cleaned everything really good. I used some baby powder on it and a little soapy water just on the bead.

It went much easier this time, and the best part is no pebbles and no leaks.

Nice, good job. The hardest part is doing it again and again. I have 11 bikes in the stable and get plenty of practice, but the first tire change :kick: But after doing it a few times (and buying lots of tubes) it only takes me about 10 minutes a tire now. BTW there is NOTHING worse than changing a tire on a KX65 :vom:

I now have a 20 gallon drum to change them on and that makes a huge difference. I suppose with the amount of tires I seem to go through, I should buy a nice stand and mounter.

I used an old atv tire my neighbor has. It worked okay and there are only 2 bikes here.

I've heard about small tires, I'm not looking forward to changing the ones on the CRF50.

Ah, the 50 will be easy. Almost no need for tool on that on.

Try a sport bike. Then you'll love changing tires on the kx65.
