Is it a 200 or 220?

How can you visually tell the difference between a 200 and a 220? Bike is an 03.

There are no decals representing either model on the bike.

Is the engine displacement on the motor anywhere?

Yes, the cylinder has the size on it. It's on the right hand side of the motor, where the reed cage meets the cylinder. it will either have 0.198l or 0.219l (I think) on it....

Yup, like that...the .218 (not .219) is a 220, .198 is a 200.

216??

Without having both side by side, I can't think of any other difference to differentiate between the two.

Thanks fellas.

It was advertised and sold as a 2003 kdx 220 to me.
It is in fact a 200. Not a big deal I guess.

Research tells me that the 200 may be favored over the 220 anyway.

Different carburetors.
Different carbs as stock, but they could be switched around with some preferring the 200 carb on the 220.

Good to know. Are there some instructions for removing this piece. When I had it apart for service a month or so ago, I could not remove those parts. Are they pinned in? I cleaned and scrubbed on them with carb cleaner. But I could not determine from the manual or from searching around here how they'd come out.

I'll have to look at my cylinder to see if the number is 0.218 or 0.216l. In either case, are the 200 cylinders marked 0.198l?

I believe he is looking for external, visual differences. There are several internal differences related to ports, pistons, etc. The only external I know of besides the cylinder markings, OE graphics and possibly the carb, is the chain. Factory 200s had regular chains while factory 220s had o-ring chains if I'm not mistaken. Not likely you would find an OE chain after all these years though.

Noticed something tonight for the first time, probably since it was dark in the shop and had a shop light laying on the floor. If you look under the case on the left side (stator side) there is a flat spot just above the drain plug. That spot has a stamped sequence of numbers on it. Mine started off as "DX200..." I'm guessing that means my motor left the factory as a 200cc KDX (which I know for certain since I bought it new). Can anyone confirm if a 220cc is stamped DX220...? If so, it's a good way to know what the bottom end was originally and if it matches what cylinder is attached.

Good eye. Mine says DX220.

And it looks like 0.216 l on the side, which matches the manual spec.

200 has an X chain, 220 has an O-ring chain ;)

(Or they did when they first left the factory)

Thanks for the info on the engine number.

Do the carbs look physically different on the outside?

Nope, the carbs are same casting between the two bikes, just different bore size. They are identical on the outside.
