Maxima 927 Picture " wow"

Post by C George »

Here is the cylinder head that I just pulled off my 05 KDX-220.
I bought the bike " brand new " in 2009 and it's never been apart.
I've run Maxima 927 for it's entire life and am just amazed at how
clean this cylinder head is. :supz:
The ONLY reason this engine is coming apart is to replace the stock
piston with a Wiseco forged one.

I'll clean up the kips system while it's apart but that too is very clean and
moves easy. Actually I forgot that I took took one tension washer out to
make it slightly tighter. A little Shop Solv and let's go.

I pulled the kips linkage cover off and there was virtually zero carbon or sludge build up.
Wiped the cover and bolted it back on.

Gotta love that smell ,,, something a modern four stroke rider will never experience.

OE Piston after five years of running Maxima 927.

Factory Knurls can be felt on the entire piston surface.

I actually sold it on E-bay ,,,,, somebody will get a lot more use out of it.

I just got my 220 head back today from RB . What a beautifull job !
Just no comparison to the local job I had done to the 200.

Turn around time was great as I mailed it out the 10th and got it back on the 18th.

Curious, how much time do you spend 'lugging' or off-idle? As a percentage of your service?

I guess I don't follow your question completely but to answer what I believe your asking is this bike is aggressively
trail ridden in usually 3rd / 4th gear. 2nd in some tight stuff.

Why ? This bike only idles to warm up and lugs very seldom. Do I rev it out to 8000 on every shift ? NO :?

Does it look like it's running rich and has fuel stains ?? It's jetted good with a 35mm ,, just has the typical 220 sputter.
I'm crossing my fingers that with all the changes this winter , it will sputter less.

You understood correctly. It's been my experience that castor blends will not look like this unless ridden a bit aggressively. A LOT aggressively if the jetting isn't right. Castor blends, if not pure castor, are the **** for WOT all the time applications. Looks like it works perfect for you, but also the reason when the 'oil question of the month' comes up I always recommend a full synthetic (non-'racing' even) for a trail bike. The superior film strength of the castor is mostly beneficial under extreme abuse. Castor certainly smells the best  If you can keep it running clean like this it would be hard to argue that castor isn't the best oil to use. Your engine looks nearly perfect inside!
