1994 KDX200 new to me

Post by jeepnhal »

Picked this bad boy up the other day.Found it on craigslist and have been on a mission to buy a 200 for a while,so I grabbed it,here it is
Image
It looks decent in pictures but,it needs plenty of love.Took at least 20 kicks to start it when I went to look at it,but after a new plug, fresh gas,and some carb adjusting,it starts on first kick now, even in this bitter cold.
As soon as she warmed up,I went to drain the oil,and of course drain plug was loose, hole was stripped. So I got to retapping it and putting a new plug in.By some miracle,it worked. No leaky, and drain plug goes in and out just fine. Then theres the oil.Of all the oil I've ever drained, this had to be the nastiest stuff i've ever seen.Black as tar, full of clutch material, just horrible. But I flushed it out repeatedly, especially whille drilling and tapping the drain, and filled her up with fresh type f,and after I ride Sunday I'll drain it again and see how it looks, hopefully good. This bike was definitely rode hard and put away wet,but thats ok,I like a challenge and look forward to bringing it back into good shape.I guess it was plated years ago,so it has high mileage, like 8300,ha.But the engine seems to have been rebuilt and runs pretty damn strong, plenty of compression,so I'm not to worried.
For now I'm going to take carb apart,to clean.replace rear pads and rear wheel bearings, flush the radiator, adjust suspension, and go on a shakedown run Sunday. After that I'll decide what I want to do for modifications and such. Can't wait to hit the trail

If your going to flush the radiator, go ahead and change the water pump seals and clutch shaft seal. Get some IMS pegs on her and IF the front forks have never been worked over with heavier springs, do that too. TRUST ME on that one, it's a god send on those forks!

While you've got the rear wheel off to change bearings do a good inspection of the linkage area and swingarm bearings as well, one of the most neglected areas of these bikes. Great find, these old tanks just keep rolling with maintenance. My dad is still riding his '93 200 that he bought brand new, it has close to 1500 hours on it and still going strong.

Funny you should say that.Had a good weather day today,so I took her out to play in the local woods, and sure enough,Im getting water in crankcase, just a little. So I just ordered the seals.

I'm going to widen the pegs myself.I've got a welder and stuff, and enjoy fabbing up my own parts. So I'll tackle that this winter

The suspension was gone through a few years ago by C-Cycle suspension in Connecticut. The guy I bought it from gave me all the paperwork on it too.I must say,it is set up right!!!I couldnt believe the way this bike handles, especially for today being slicker than snot, ice everywhere.I was very inpressed.

Surprisingly all the linkage seems tight.I was thinknig about taking it apart and cleaning and lubing it.On the other hand, thinking maybe I should just leave well enough alone.

Ive always know them to be tanks, which is why I finally got one after all theese years..Thats awesome that your pops still has his,and thats some good hours!!!Thing sounds like a beast
