any trails in sw. pa.

Post by KDXSMITH »

I just bought a 98, 220. I haven't been trail riding for 5 or 6 yrs. It seems that everywhere I used to ride is closed. Does anybody know of trails to ride in sw. pa. ?

This place is about center of the state near the Ohio Line. Hillsville, Pa.

It's an old strip mine abandoned in the early 70's. Tons of trails. Lots of nasty, knarley hillclimbs...

Blimpman.
Thanks, that looks cool. How (where) do you get access to the trails (park the truck)?

Take the road from the back of the fireworks store parking lot that is just off of Rte 224 ( about 1 mile short of the Ohio Line)

Follow that road about 1/4 mi, keep veering to the left and you will come to a nice flat wide open parking area. We were riding ATV's this day. Here is what the parking area looks like. The road coming from the FW store is in the upper right. That road can be soft.... Another area is just SW off of 224 from the FW store near what looks like an old wooden terminal for loading trucks I think.

You can also park near those mounds in the lower left of the picture.

Is Hillsville still open? I have heard some reports of posting and trouble with police when parking. True or rumors? I have never ridden here but I am trying to find some new, non-pay places for this year.

I personally never had any problems, never saw anyone that was moving people out of there. The last time I went there the Fireworks store parking lot had a chain over the entrance during non-business hours so we just went up the road a bit and made access to the riding area thru an old well used road.

I usually went early and late in the season so there were not many riders. It is a big place and I think most of the riders there are locals.

Not far away is Mines & Meadows. $25 / day but worth it. Buy a season pass and save alot if you can ride there frequently. There is a brutal 11 mile single track there not to be missed..... if you can handle it.... Kinda technical but not unridable. You will be tired after the end....

The guy who owns it is really a great guy and is in the process of aquiring another huge section of land to add to the 800 acres there already.

Here is a loop on the green trail at mines and meadows. http://vimeo.com/16327824

Thanks for the replies but I am further to the south.
These places look great but I don't want to drive 1.5 to 2 hrs.
each way. Anyone know places further south like Fayette county
or southern Westmoreland county?

You sound like you are in my area. I have been riding mostly at ICVATV trails. $80/yr and lots of good stuff for bikes even though it caters to ATV's. Go during the week and you will have the place all to yourself.

Not many "free" places left around unless you know the land owner and I won't trespass so that's why I joined ICV when I got back into dirtbikes. Mountain Ridge is good too, but can get expensive unless you buy a season pass.

Thanks for the info blimpman!

Is it currently ok to ride there? Hillsville I mean. This is super close to me. Recently just lost where I rode mostly my whole life. Knew most of the farmers around me had tons of land to ride. People get old and times change I suppose. I might just take a ride out there and check it out just looking to save a little gas lol. Thanks!

I have been in Florida since Nov 2010 but I suppose it is still open. It never was really "legal" in a written sense. People have been riding there since the mid 70's when the strip mine closed. Lots of really tough trails there and lots of fun!

I ride the Houston/Cannonsburgh area every chance I get. That may be a half hour or 45 mins for ya, but we got a whole mess o ridin!

Whoever is kind of in the SW PA area, we should all get together for a ride once the weather breaks and it dries out a little.

I'd be interested if it isn't too far from Clarion. And I usually come with a kid in tow, but he can ride better than me. I have seen hillsville posted before, but haven't made it there yet.
