2012 Hammer Run

Post by Toms220r »

Any KDXers considering riding the Hammer Run on Nov3-4? I may do it with some guys from my Club but would enjoy twisting it with some Green 2smokers also (and to dilute the orange mafia!)
Looks like 170 miles in 2 days.

This would probably cure my riding jones for a month or so before the snow arrives. Any one ever done this event or a similar length event on a KDX? All the videos look like this should be a blast!

2012 Hammer Run

Post by dfeckel »

I have done the Sunday (second day) of the Hammer run for the last five years running. It is one of my favorite rides of the year. This year I hope to do both days, but if not both then definitely Sunday. I'll be on my hybrid.

Typically, Saturday is more "big bike" friendly, with lots of firecuts and more open single track. Sunday has more snotty enduro trail. Expect both days to have the best terrain South Jersey has to offer: sand, whoops, fast fire cuts, slow tight sections, and even some steep (but short) climbs.

Be sure to carry some premix oil with you, because you'll be filling up at a gas station. I have a 3.4 gallon tank, so I carry just enough to mix up one extra gallon, which ends up being plenty.

The only trouble I sometimes have is the "dualsporter" mentality. I'm permanently stuck with the "enduro" mentality, so when I'm moving, I'm moving as fast as I can. This event attracts a bunch of folks who don't ride enduros, and some just won't move over to let a fast guy pass. It's understandable. They paid their entry and want to have a good ride at their own pace, but it can get frustrating some times. Happily, you have all day to finish the ride, so you can always just take a ten minute break and wait for some clear trail.

I'm definitely doing both days. A bunch of guys from my club are doing it also...they are FAST. I'm probably faster than the dualsport guys but definteily a slow C rider...I've got my 3.2oz of oil in my camelback. Getting psyched for it...Hopefully the weather will work out. I don't mind the cold but the rain I can do without. See you there!
