is it worth it
i just found a 97 kdx 200 for $1400 i ride a 1990 now and love the bike, what changes were made to the 97 , were these bikes as reliable as my 1990. is there any issues i sould be aware of before i look at buying this bike. i have a set of 2003 kx forks that i was going to put on my 1990 but if i buy this newer bike the forks will go on it. thank for any input

H feels a little narrower. The kips don't break like they do on the E's
An H does not have the torque that the E's have

I have no E experience, but I can say that the H is also a very reliable bike. They do have good torque and run strong. I would consider the 97 for nothing else than parts availability in the future. As any bike gets older the parts start to get harder to come by. The price is very subject to your area. Some people will tell you it is way to much and others will tell you it is a good deal. Around me they go for around $1500 - $2500 for an H series.

i have a 96 kdx200, and love it. hadnt had one single problem with it yet. parts are still easy to get. im with rbates9, i have never rode the older modle kdx200, so i really cant compair the power, or torqe. $1400 seems like a good price IF it in real good shape>

I don't know what used bikes sell for in your area....
I paid $1000 for a 2000 model 200 back in July. It didn't need anything to be ridden. The tires were worn, but not worn out. Same for the chain and sprockets. Bike was all stock except for the pipe. So far all I've done is buy new tires, chain, sprockets, the front end parts I didn't already have to convert to a CR250 front end, MX rear fender, and install a Dyna Ring. Before spring I'll top end the motor, have the shock serviced, convert the front end, go through all the linkage bearings, have RB Designs do the carb and head, etc., etc., etc.....

I bought 2004 with original tires that had never had the carb off for $1200, and there have been a couple other 2002 200's and 220's on CL lately here in STL in the $12-1400 range that looked to be all original plastic in great condition.

Doesn't sound to great to me. My neighbor just picked up a 97 that runs good but needs a few bits and pieces for $275, and a 96 in darn near perfect condition for $900. After having ridden the 96, there's not much to it that I prefer to my 89. The more modern look is nice, but performance wise, it's got nothing on mine.

Just a few quick examples. The are from $1000 that needs to be put back together to $2200 that is ready to ride. So the price mabe high but if you want one you have to pay for it. At least around here.

Yeah I always cringe when people talk about how cheap they can buy bikes for, because all areas are different really. Prices are pretty high here in the SW PA area. I got lucky and got a buddy deal on my 2003 ($1000), but I see 1987's sell for $850 and was looking at a 1990 for $1000 when I found a friend of a friend say he needed cash for school so he'd sell me his.
Just look at what other bikes are selling for and if it's comparable and you want the bike, then the price is fair

I would give a grand for a E series in great shape. I have had both... loved my E series a tad bit more as the motor was more torquey... even with no mods.
Don't sell the 90 if you get the 97... keep them both so you can see what the differences are.
The E is more comfy.... The H seems more nimble.... both are incredible bikes on their own.

Thanks for all your input, I agree with it depends on your area for price up here in central alberta canada I feel it a little high this guy was asking $1800, so I shot him the offer of $1400 which he accepted, butttt if I look through kijiji I can get moto x bikes that r newer for cheaper I don't want a moto x bike but its something to compair against. To be honest I don't think our loved kdx 200 was a big seller here in canada as very rarely do u see one for sale. I bought my 1990 in almost show room floor condition for $300 dollars but that was just being in the right place at the right time deals, and I love the bike, and I owes me nothing so I would never part with it, but I am looking to build a modded 200 with front forks and engine work and I think the newer thiner kdx would handle the mods better. I think I might be the owner of a new kdx 200 soon, thanks for all the help

The KDX is pretty common out here on the east coast of Canada. I see them for sale on Kijiji quite often. The prices are usually a bit higher than what you all seem to get them for in the US. Although my buddy just bought a 1992 200 for $550...it's pretty rough but the motor works excellent. We were out riding today and I tried his bike, it was my first time on a 200 and I was quite impressed with how the motor works and I really liked the lightness of it compared to my 250.I don't think our loved kdx 200 was a big seller here in canada
