12T countershaft sprocket - cause problems?

Post by MontanaKDX »

I am considering trying a 12T front sprocket on my KDX220. I have heard and read about problems occuring by doing this. Does anyone have any experience with countershaft problems with this set up? ( 12/47 ). Premature wear, seal damage etc?

some accelerated wear on the chain and sprocket from the tighter bend. Nothing other than that.

I have run a 12 for years with no issues at all. It will wear out a bit quicker than a larger one, so do yourself a favor and buy two. Normally, I stick by the "change both sprockets and the chain at the same time" position, but running a 12 t CS sprocket, I deviate from this plan and replace only the CS sprocket when I start to see wear.

+1
I normally go through two CS for every one chain / rear sprocket, when using a 12 CS

+ However many it is on the slighty faster wear. One more thing is that the 12/47 combo has been known to be a better fit on the 200 than the 220. The increased over rev of the 200 keeps it happier with the lower gearing. Depends on what type of terrain and how you ride. Gear ratio can be as much of a personal opinion thing as it is a performance issue. I like 12/47 on the 200. It is cheap to try it. Go for it. If you don't like it take it off and fling it at someone you don't like.

12/47 seems to work out pretty good for me. Like the others have said it is cheaper to play with the front. Then see if you like the difference before buying a different rear, or just stick with what you have. More teeth will last longer but not a huge difference. :partyman:

Thanks to all that responded. I'm going to order a 12T and see if I like it.
