Why it their Play in my Forks ? ?

Weird....just noticed this.
2005....gold valves and racehtech springs.
If I hold the front brake and then push the bike forwards and down (to compress the forks. I get some "play".
It feels like...as soon as the fork starts to compress it "let's go" for about an inch then "grabs back". Meaning as I push down the fork has about an inch of "easy travel"...make sense?
Push down, feel resistance for just a bit, fork lets go and get's easy for about an inch, then grabs back, regular compression from then on.....
