Gutting an H series pipe

Is there any benefit to gutting an H series pipe? I have read about gutting the pipes of the older models, and it is supposed to work well, but I have not found anything refering to the H series bikes.
Thanks!

It's a dual wall pipe to keep it quiet... it works for that... nothing much else.

Inda, Have you tried this, or cut one open to see what is inside? On the older KDX's, there is perforated mesh, and insulation that can be removed. On the H series KDX's, it almost looks like the secondary wall is attached on the outside.
The pipe on my '04 200 appears to have been repaired before, and it has a couple of very small pin-hole leaks (I can see oily ooze where they are), so I was going to cut it open and see what it looks like on the inside...

I haven't personally. Reason being is that I don't have a mig welder to button it back up. I have heard that the metal is very thin without the support of the inner wall.

Ah, I would have to agree with that observation, but I doubt that it will stop me from experimenting anyway. I have access to a MIG and a full machine shop, so if I get in trouble, I should be able to back my way out of it, or force a new pipe purchase upon myself...

It may end up being a new pipe purchase.......

Pipes are really hard to weld on unless you are good (I'm not) and can get them really clean. The material is very thin and saturated with oil. I did the best I could with my MIG gun on one and finally took it to a guy I know who is a pipe welder. He used TIG and had a heck of a time with it as well.

But so what? A shiny new pipe is not a bad thing, and save the cylinder end connection for a possible hybrid or custom pipe in the future :supz:

Karl, I have welded/repaired many pipes, and you are correct, they can be tough. I will let you guys know what happens, when I eventually get around to doing the job...
