Anyone tried DID 520 VT2 Narrow Enduro Racing X-Ring Chain?
I'm going to completely go through our KDX 200. I'll be replacing all wear parts and having RB Designs re-work the carb and cylinder head while I'm doing the MX fork conversion. We run DID chains on our CR250s (not the one I'm asking about here) and was wondering if anyone here has tried the DID 520 VT2 Narrow Enduro Racing X-Ring Chain on their KDX?
Also, what gear ratio are you guys running? The bike has stock sprockets on it now and (compared to modified CR250s) it seems a little weak.

Can't help you with the chain as I have no experience with it but I must say... stop comparing the power of a KDX to a CR250!. The CR is way more explosive than a KDX will ever be. The KDX was designed with a completely different philosophy than an MX bike. If you really want CR power then stick with the CR but don't ever expect the KDX to be something its not.David_L6 wrote:....and (compared to modified CR250s) it seems a little weak.
Please don't take what I'm saying as a slam at you. You just have to learn to love the KDX for what it is and not worry about what it is not.

I like the stock ratio, especially with the RBD stuff done. I'm on a 220 motor, though.
Third gear will run tight ST all day long.
I don't see why that chain would not be fine. The only problem I've ever had with an O/X-ring chain is the master link CLIP getting worn down. Not a big deal. I've used a "clip-less" chain before and that took care of that issue, anyway.
When you get tired of one of those CR's, stick the KDX motor in it. That is a nice combination. A nicely tuned KDX motor, RBD stuff done or not, will probably be held back by the KDX chassis before the motor, anyway.

Ron will definitely be getting some more business from me. In addition to the carb and head mods, he's going to help me get an MX front end installed on the KDX.
When I get tired of the 250 motor, I'll see about sticking a 500 in the 250 frame.
Thanks. I'll get one ordered. The rivet style master link is OK. I have the tools for them.kdxquebec wrote:That's what I run on my '89 (13/48) Nothing bad to say about this chain. They are thin so it don't rub everywhere...They come with a rivet master link.
Stock gear ratio it is then. Thanks for the tip.KarlP wrote:I like the stock ratio, especially with the RBD stuff done. I'm on a 220 motor, though.

Lowering your gearing will definitely give you more punch. IMO, gear it for where you ride most. If you find yourself right in between gears all the time, you could use a slight change in final gearing. Most time you can get by with just going one lower on the front.

Mine is not all that "explosive". I've modded it to tame the "hit" of a typical MX bike without loosing all the top end power (JD jetting, RB Designs modified head, Gnarly pipe, Q Stealth silencer, Steahly flywheel weight, changed the gearing to keep motor on the pipe at lower ground speeds so I don't get the "hit"....). It's still not as smoooooth as the KDX (I DO like the KDX power delivery) but it isn't as bad as most MX bikes. I think it's a combination of the different delivery of the KDX along with 50 cc less displacement that kind of surprised me at first. Since I've spent more time on the KDX I've gotten used to it. I've just been on MX bikes too long I guess....SS109 wrote:....stop comparing the power of a KDX to a CR250!. The CR is way more explosive than a KDX will ever be. Have you tried a carb swap to a 38mm PWK. With the correct slide and needle combo (#7 slide and a CEK needle) it has made my CR a wonderful woods bike. The PWK is so much easier to live with than the Mikuni also. It is no where near as picky and finicky. Still have all the power , but the delivery has that KDX smoothness. It is like a souped up KDX.

That is EXACTLY what I'm shooting for with my CR250!skythrasher wrote:It is like a souped up KDX.
No, I haven't tried the Keihin carb yet although I've seen it recommended a number of times and places. I've had good luck with the JD jet kits in the Mikuni carbs - especially since I had RB Designs correct the squish clearance.
I'd like to try an Airstriker but I don't have the money right now. Whatever I buy for one of our CR250s (I ride the '02 - my son races the '03) I usually end up buying for the other (flywheel weight being an exception). Right now I'm re-building the KDX I just bought (MX front end, top end job, tires, suspension bearings, chain, sprockets.....) so I don't have ~$500 for two carbs. One of these day though..... One of these days.....

I would like to try the airstriker and compare to the standard Keihin that I have. Watch ebay and you can find them for cheap. The mid to late ninetys KX250's had PWK 38 with the #7 slide already. Also some of the YZ's had these also. If you can find a used one with the slide you want it will save you a little.
My '02 has 38mm PWK, Gnarly pipe, 14oz Stealhy, Turbine Core II S/A, and I have played with the servo cables to get the power valve to open when I want.
It has great low end grunt and you can dial up the pipe just by cracking the throttle to that little spot you have it dialed at.
Here is a link to a thread with my CR. I have since added a Scott's damper.

Do those newer CR's take the carb with the TPS activated powerjet? I have a 36mm PWK of this type if you are interested. I'm a big fan of the 36 on a 250....For all the reasons above. Lots of newer bikes are coming this way, like the orange ones.
