Power Valve cleaning and freshening tips needed

Post by Paul7777 »

Is there an easy way to clean the power valve? Maybe a few tanks of gas mixed with Amsoil Intercepter. Would I go higher or lower than 32:1? What about other additives - Sea Foam or Marvel? I mix with 89 octane. Could I try higher or lower?

How about a hotter plug? The consensus seems to be the BR8ES. I have no idea why but there's a BR9EV in there now. What's the difference between an ES and an EV?

I bought this thing new in 1997 but only ride it a few times a year - well once last year, and zero in 08. It's stock (including the purple seat) except for an FMF Rev pipe and Turbine Core II silencer. I also took off the air box lid and installed a UNI air filter. I've never touched a jet, or the reeds. I had the piston replaced back in '03 but the one that came out looked brand new (maybe I should have them put it back in?). At that time they told me they cleaned the power valve which was pretty gummed up.

This thing runs and runs and I don't want to take it in for a new top end again if I don't have to. It's never not started and I've never had a fouled plug. I just replace them every couple seasons when I feel I have enough rides on them. When I take the KIPS cover off the side, there's no solid carbon - only a bit of gooey black oil.

Also, should I bother installing Boyeson Power Reeds without any intentions of jetting?

I would not think your KIPS assembly would be very gummed if you ride it as little as stated. If the bike is working O.K., leave it be.

I have found the BR8 plug will last and last. I think the BR9 is what is called for stock. I can't comment on the ES and EV difference.

It could probably use a jetting change if it is still stock.

BR9 was a misprint in the manual.... too cold of plug and will decrease performance.

BR8ES is the correct plug for all year KDX's..... I have tried just about every form of 8 heatrange plug and the BR8ES performs as well as any of them and is common as a zit.

Just found this spark plug code sheet on the NGK site:
http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/docs/tech/ ... berkey.pdf

I'll get a BR8ES. What about plug gap?

Does anyone have any thoughts on non-physical power valve cleaning like those I mentioned above (additives, hotter plugs, lower octane, etc.)? If I set it up to run hotter and rip down some dirt roads at wide-open-throttle, will that burn out carbon deposits?

I wouldn't play with fire.... Just run the BR8ES plug and do your normal maintenance... Gap should be .7 to .8mm ... but honestly most of us just slap them in without checking the gap.

Just switch to the interceptor and run it...Sounds like your PV's are OK. Repack silencer, and plan on re-packing again after a while...
