What king of piston, rings, gaskets should I buy?

Where should I buy the stuff?

I have a stock '96 KDX200. I've been riding it a few times a year for he past four years. My wife and kids are now into trail riding so I've ridden it about a dozen times this year. I've noticed more smoke lately. This past Saturday it got very hot, melted the number plate on the right. The coolent level was about an inch below the low mark in the resivore. I flushed and replace the coolent. I also found the air filter to be damaged and quit a bit of powdered filter foam had made it way into the carb. I pulled the airbox, carb and reeds and cleaned everything, replaced the filter. After everthing was put back together, it fired on the second kick.

wiesco is the most common for piston
I used tusk gasket top end kit, or moose...

I'd get a new filter if I were you and some good quality oil for the filter.

I put a UNI filter in it, with No-Toil spray filter oil. I'm itching to take it out and run it to see if its going to overheat again. My neighbors give me dirty looks when I ride it through the hood.

Uni and No toil both claim that Uni filters will come apart in No Toil oil.

They don't say how long it takes. I had a stock filter come apart from using too hot water. I glued it back together and it still works. You can buy No Toil pre-oiled filters from RM pretty cheap too.

I used uni and no toil, yes they do come apart.
HOWEVER, I found that by the time they did (mine lasted about a year which is as long as the oem one lasted), they were good to be replaced, the foam was getting brittle and turning into dust.
I used to throw it in the washing machine though and I'm sure that didn't help.
Now I soak them a few min in warm water with soap and repeat the process untill they are clean (2-3 times)

Why are you headed for a rebuild, though?

It may not be necessary.

Did you do a compression check? Does it run O.K.?

I'm just saying, these are pretty tough motors. I'm on year three with a 220 motor in a hybrid and I ride a LOT, couple of times a week and twice on weekends, 1.5 to 2 hours run-time each, so I've got probably 400 hours on the last rebuild (It might be time, now)

I'm not sure I do need a top end. I'm going to borow a compression tester this friday and check it. The bike runs pretty well. It smokes more than I think it should. That could be the cheap oil I use (whatever is on sale at wal Mart).

Usually if it starts getting hard to start or jet... then it is ready for a top end. Otherwise, if it is running good... I don't worry about it.

This is the reponse from UNI about the filter oil. Not too specific about the possible inplications of using No-Toil on the UNI filter.


To UNI:

Someone on the KDXrider.net told me that you shouldn't use No-toil on a UNI filter. Is this true? The manager at my local Cycle Gear sold me the stuff together along with the No-toil cleaner. Tell me the truth, before ruin my filter, or bike.

That was a safe answer. What was conspicuously absent was any comments about the other product, good or bad.

I don't think that they are going to get rich off your choice of filter oil. I wash mine by hand with Dawn and water and use Silkolene spray.... safe for all filters.

If you're saying the filter may come apart at the glued seams, that's not a big concern. I was worried that the foam was going to disintergrate and get sucked into the carb.[/img]

No Toil is alcohol based. It's the alcohol that disolves the glue at the seams of air filters.

If you use the No Toil on a non approved filter, the faster it dries the less it softens the glue.

On my non approved filters, if I'm not installing them for use right away I wet them down and set them on a clean paper towel or newspaper in the sun or on the hood of my truck to dry.

Most of my filters are now the No Toil type so it's not too much of an issue.

Since it's alcohol based I just clean my filters in a small bucket of alcohol. They clean right up and dry very fast. I don't even have to wait for them to dry all the way before I re oil (with No Toil) them.

I just use the No Toil soap. Seems to work great and I can do it in the kitchen without stinking the place up.
