Toluene can be used as an octane booster in gasoline fuels used in internal combustion engines. Toluene at 86% by volume fueled all the turbo Formula 1 teams in the 1980s, first pioneered by the Honda team. The remaining 14% was a "filler" of n-heptane, to reduce the octane to meet Formula 1 fuel restrictions. Toluene at 100% can be used as a fuel for both two-stroke and four-stroke engines; however, due to the density of the fuel and other factors, the fuel does not vaporize easily unless preheated to 70 degrees Celsius (Honda accomplished this in their Formula 1 cars by routing the fuel lines through the muffler system to heat the fuel). Toluene also poses similar problems as alcohol fuels, as it eats through standard rubber fuel lines and has no lubricating properties as standard gasoline does, which can break down fuel pumps and cause upper cylinder bore wear.
In Australia, toluene has been found to have been illegally combined with petrol in fuel outlets for sale as standard vehicular fuel. Toluene attracts no fuel excise, while other fuels are taxed at over 40%, so fuel suppliers are able to profit from substituting the cheaper toluene for petrol. This substitution is likely to affect engine performance and result in additional wear and tear. The extent of toluene substitution has not been determined.[7][8]

Most likely is the main component in your octane booster

Indeed, go for it.

Why though? What are the benefits?

Huh, never stumbled across that thread before. Just read the whole thing through. Of course, I've never felt the need to mix anything with my fuel. I have no problems with pinging running 89 or 91 or 93, so the thought never occurred to me. I've never been much on octane booster in a bottle either. Never thought it was good for much except removing a few dollars from your wallet.

I might have to give this toluene a try though. Sounds to good to be true?

Hrmmmm.....

It's really a throttle response thing. Max HP will be attained by using the lowest octane possible to prevent detonation. Toluleme mix/race gas yields better throttle response in most conditions (don't ask me why), but will lessen peak HP (who cares). In a lot of cases I think this is due to the fact that the higher octane fuel will run leaner, magically leaning your jetting that was too rich. FWIW, I run straight premium. I've gotten detonation in my WR with that even (since ethanol) so will start to run some tolulene.

Ah. So if you're jetted to a gnats ass, re-jetting would be required if you want to mix some toluene in? Too lean is not where I want to be. Blech @ ethanol. It's almost impossible to find a station selling ethanol free gas these days.

Big NO to that...I must've been hitting the crack pipe yesterday. Race gas will run RICHER.

Yes, the ethanol sucks real bad...esp in a 2-cycle. Well, it's not too bad until it starts to take on water which is immediately. Marinas are the only places left that have it around here, and it's only a touch more to go to a shop and order 5gal drums of VP.

Luckily, here in Billings, some of our pumps have no ethanol in a couple grades. For example, yesterday where I filled up, the low grade did NOT have an ethanol sticker, the 88 med grade had %10 ethanol..and the high grade 91 had no ethanol...

I like the snap from Toluene and have run it for a few years.
The last time I bought it was from Sherwin Williams paint store
and was about 18 bucks a gallon. That may have been late 2008
or early 2009. I haven't run more that 20 gallons of gas in the KDX
sense then.
It also cleaned up the spooge from the can and changed
to a light black powder.

I'm intrigued. Next fill up I'll give it a try.
