Alright... which Octane Gas and what Premix?

Post by Sapphire »

Well, the 06’ 200 is coming to my house, possibly tonight… but if not, by the end of the weekend.

When I get gas for this thing, should I buy the premium at 92 or 91 Octane (that’s premium here in Billings) or mid grade (88) or low (86)…

What premix ratio should I start with and how do I decide how to adjust it? And…wheres the best place to grab my 2 smoke oil? I’ve got a Honda and Yami shop nearby…. Napa, Checkers…etc….

I paid more for a KDX than most of you recommended…But F’ it…. In 3 or 4 years time the pain will be gone and I’ll still have a sweet KDX…plus another K or so in mods!

Thanks all!

Premium gas, and any good synthetic mix you feel comfortable with. I use amsoil myself, but yamalube is fine. Not much at napa that will be any good unless you want chainsaw oil (blech).

Mix it 32 or 40:1, and jet accordingly. You can run less oil if you want, however I see no reason to. Tests have shown that power output increases as oil content goes up, to a point.

I have not seen any benefits of running premium myself. The manual calls for 89 octane I believe. Ratio... 40:1 is the most common ratio ran. Oil.... Some NAPA stores sell Amsoil Interceptor.... but Motul is good too... Full Synthetic is what you want to run regardless of brand.

Thats great. You just picked the wrong time of the year to buy. All prices are up 20-30% around here right now.

I use Yamalube 2s at 40:1 with premium (91 oct. here)

Valid point Inda. There will be no problem running regular as long as you don't get detonation (pre-ignition) using 87/89. Mine will in certain situations, so I just run premium and have no problems.

i use the high octane 92 or 91 can't recall, I did notice a small difference versus lower octane. The bike seems to run better. Is it just in my head? Maybe, but the price difference is not that bad so why not.
Another thing I do is get the gas at the same gas station every time. I used a different one a few times and in every case: something was off, don't know zactly why but I could tell the bike was running funky.

Double check me... I used Inda's calculator...

At 42:1... two make 2 gallons of gas, I am going to use 6.1 oz of oil...

Right?

I mix 5 gallons at a time at 40:1. This takes 16 ounces. Makes it simple to keep track. Or 8 ounces for 2.5 gallons, etc etc.

Yep. Curious, why 42:1? The most common ratios are 32:1 and 40:1

2g fuel/6.4oz oil = 40:1
2g fuel/8oz oil = 32:1

BTW, I run 32:1 on 91 octane and here is the online ratio chart I use http://www.csgnetwork.com/oilfuelcalc.html. It has metric and imperial units.

Gives it a much better bottom end.

It allows you to get the front end up at much lower rpm's

I don't know that Xylene is recommended, I ran out of Toluene and thought I'd try it.

Seems to want to rev a lot faster, not sure if thats a good thing or not

Carvr also runs Toluene, along with clear gas (no Alcohol) plus he mixes in a certain amount of race gas

Maybe its just me but it seems that we will spend hundreds on pipes, reeds, carb work and so on for our bikes to run better but then when it comes down to using better gas and oil for our bikes to run better and last longer get cheap. I always run minumim 91 octane and goto shell or chevron for gas I don't do the budget gas stations. 10 gallons of gas will last a whole weekend of good riding and only cost 4 more seems like cheap insurance. My $.02

Fact is, there is no benefit to running a higher octane fuel unless you experience detonation using lower octane. Octane rating is a measurement of the fuels resistance to pre-ignition, nothing more.

That's right.... there is more "Energy" in lower octane fuel.

What's the theory on octane and elevation? I run regular in my four stroke on the trails near my house 6000+', it loves it.

At sea level it hates it.
