Hi, anyone tried using the magnetic oil drain plug? is it worth buying one for the KDX. or it is just another gimmick like the FRP torque ring? good to have but not a must have kind of thing.

got one, will tell you if you have iron base shavings and potential problems in the tranny.
I've heard of one problem where the magnet got loose and caused damages, but i think they changed the design since.

Buy the one that is made of anodized aluminum with the magnet instead of the steel one with magnet.

I am curios why?

It seems to reason that if the magnet came loose you would want the steel plug so it would stay stuck to the plug, instead of moving about the tranny.

What is better about the aluminum plug?

The threads on the aluminum plug are about the same strength as the ones in the cases - so you never have to worry about stripping the cases (in theory).

Actually, I've used both steel and aluminum. You can "feel" the tighness of the aluminum plug as you reach the proper torque. The steel one keeps tightening beyond that point until you start to get any feedback.

I've used precision calibrated torque wrenches all over the bikes. But for the drain plugs, I prefer the hand "feel" of a good clean thread and an aluminum plug. I add lockwire just because I like doing it that way, since back in the days of roadracing tech inspections.

BTW - never had a magnet come loose in all of the motorcycles I've used them on.

Everyone has a different preference. I happen to like the aluminum ones.

Thanks for the explanation. I have never put an ounce of thought into drain plugs until I read this thread.

They need them to collect all of the shredded internals as you ride. I hear you can send the shavings to Austria and they collect them and build all new motors with them too.

thaks for all the views, so i take it that it is a good investment for the magnetic drain plug.
