When to replace reeds?

Postby johnyblaze » 07:51 am Apr 16 2010

I'm new to 2-strokes - the 220 is my first. It supposedly has Boyesen reeds but I don't know which. Looks like the stock reed cage so I'm assuming it's not the Rad, V2 or V3 setup.

Bike generally runs really well, so I'm inclined to leave well enough alone. But... how would I know when the reeds aren't up to par. Is it by visual inspection? Performance drop? Lean or rich symptoms? More smoke? Do you replace them by hours or miles?

Thanks

I would just put V-force3 in it.. I was the same as you and didn't really know when i needed them, but one day i got a wild hair and just ordered some.. Then i realized i needed them the whole time! They really help out and bump performance.

You just look at them. They can get frayed at the ends or even break. Also, look to make sure they are laying flat on the cage surface, not open when you have them out.

As an update - I finally just ordered the MT V-force 3 reed system. It'll go in when I send my carb and head to RB for a rework.
